Hi,

I just bought & installed a V3-3000 and wanted to know if it's possible to
overclock it (I thought it was mentioned here long time ago). Any help is
welcome!

You find lots of apps for overclocking on www.3dfiles.com for
instance.

Some report that they had overclocked their V3 to 200 MHz, but i was
able to only get it to 174 before artifacs popped up. It depends on
the ram. I got a card from the wrond product line it seems :(

Use small steps, and then test it with Q3 or Unreal Tournament,
something demanding. When you see small white sqares pop ut randomly
around the screen you have gone to far :)

Also consider cooling. The V3 without a fan is very hot, mine got
about 70 degrees celsius after some serious Half-Life action. I simply
bought a cheap Coolermaster-fan for a celeron, removed the fan from
the heatsink and put the fan on the V3 with some stips :) Does wonders
for your card.

Anyway, a small overclock of your CPU is far more effective on GPL
than a little graphicscard overclocking :)

Yes, it is possible, the following is snipped from my webpage
(overclocking section):

Overclocking the Voodoo3 Graphics Card:

Want to speed up that Voodoo 3 graphics card? Want to get faster game
graphics? Easy peesy: - Go in to your Windows directory and double click
on Regedit.exe (or from the desktop select start, run, and type in
regedit) Your Registry Editor should open. Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Scroll down to 'System' and select that and you will open the
CurrentControSet directory. Now select the 'Services' folder. Select the
'Class' folder. Scroll down until you see the 'Display' folder. Select
it and you're in. from the 'Display' folder you may have several 000X
type folders. These are your old or previous graphics card's registry
settings. Leave these as they are and locate the one that is for your
Voodoo 3 card. It should say something like "3Dfx Voodoo 3" next to the
DriverDesc. Now select it and you will open five more folders. Open the
'Default' folder and add a NEW STRING VALUE. Name it "Grxclock". Modify
the Grxclock value to whatever you fancy trying your luck at.

If you have a 143 MHz board (The V3 2000 runs at a clock speed of 143
MHz, the V3 3000 runs at 166 MHz and the V3 3500 runs at 183 MHz) and
want to try 160MHz then simply try put in "160". Don't overdue it, try
small increases one at a time to see if they work ok. I suggest
increments of about +5MHz at any one time.

If the card stops working, go back to the last setting, as this
indicates you have gone too high, or the card is overheating. You can
add cooling (fans) or use a freeze spray which coats your graphics card
chips and keeps them cool (available from hardware shops or the net).
You can also try leaving one free PCI slot between the V3 card and any
other cards, this aids cooling.

To really speed up games using your V3 card, you should disable the
V-synch option. For Glide based games you'll need to simply add in a
single line into your autoexec.bat file found in the root directory.

Add this line: SET FX_GLIDE_SWAPINTERVAL=0

For D3D games locate the following directory from the Windows registry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\000X
\D3D]

Then simply add this string value: "SSTH3_SWAPINTERVAL"="0"

With these settings your games frame rates should be much faster.

8-)

There is a nice voodoo3 tweak guide at www.tweak3d.net  In the guide
there is a download link for Gary Petersons overclocking utility.  It
is a very nice tool and is a much safer way to overclock your card than
hacking the registry.

I use an older version of Peterson's V3 overclocker because it has a couple
more features. The newest version will work with Win2000 though. The old
version is in the utilities section on my site.
