V3/3000 downgrade

After installing the DX7 driver  "upgrade" and the MS DX7a drivers my
frame rate on N3 is less than before the upgrade.  I also had jitter on
the gameport that didn't show up under game controllers but did show up
in N3.  The only way I could get my wheel to work was to select the DX7
under N3 Options menu and change the wheel ID# to 1 under the WIN98SE
game controller menu.

Does anyone have any suggestions for the lower frame rate I'm
experiencing?  I rather not go back to the old drivers.  This usually
causes even more serious problems.  Are there any tweaks WIN98SE or DX7a
tweaks that might help?

My system is:
PIII-600
V3/3000
128 kB RAM
WIN98SE
MX300 sound/gameport

Regards,
Marvin

Since that is the preferred method AND N3 is 3 year old technology,
and so probably hasn't been designed to take advantage of the dx7
controller improvements,  why is this bad?
