GPL racing help needed !

I am an admitted Sim *** and download every sim demo I can. As most of
you know, I recently upgraded my HP166 by adding a Monster 3d card and an
additional 16 mb of ram. ( total now is 32 MB).

I recall when the GPL demo came out, there was a lot of controversy about
whether it
was realistic for time period. I remember that 90% of the RAS NG postings
was about GPL. I did download it at the time but couldn't get it to work.
(before the above add-ons)

IMHO, the cars are very difficult drive as there is no downforce and bad
brakes. It appears you have to brake in a straight line and always have to
ease on the gas coming out of the turn.Other than the analog dial type tach
there appears to be no other available info while driving. After sliding off
the track, trying to find reverse is hard.

I realize that this is the 90's and the cars are not suppose to be easy but
it is
frustrating. Can someone or everyone give me some tips on driving this sim
without
sliding off the track. should I turn in braking and steering help? will
changing tires help? Can someone geve me some feedback?

Thanks as always -  Tim

1st: Practice
2nd: Practice more
3rd: Practice even more

I know, it's quite different from modern day F1 sims, but heck, it was really
difficult to drive these cars back in -67, you know. Why should you get up to
speed without practice?

A few hints, then:
Do the braking when the cars moves in a straight line. You can use a little
braking during turn-in, and in fact you should so that the front wheels get a
little more grip because of the weight displacement...
Don't use too much opposite lock driving, this will slow you down (in particular
in the first section)
Try to get the car as balanced as possible during and prior to turn-in. This is
a very important aspect, and you'll see that a stable car during the turn-in
will make it possible to carry more speed into and through the turn...
Practice throttle steering a lot, you can turn, hold your wheel stable and steer
through the turns using the throttle (when you're in a turn and you let go of
the throttle holding the wheel steady, you'll see what I mean...)

---Asgeir---/I love it when the sims are as difficult as this...

I agree GPL is quite hard to drive. I have just managed one lap without
spinning so far.... I already discovered: one should turn in a corner
extremely early (compared to GP2***instance)

By the way: if the care is slid off the track or spun, shift-R resets it
(after the car is completely stationar)

You have to sink to boot in dood.
Think about it if you have an object going one way and then you turn it to
the left 90 degrees it is still going to want to go straight ahead (hence
you sliding off the track). However the rear wheels are facing in the
direction you want the car to go, so gas it up and let the power do the
steering.

Practice is definately the key to this sim. You'll slide off the track alot
more times yet before you get a good lap in.Try  the G3s first, they are alot
easier to drive, then move up to the G2s then the G1s.You'll love it once you
get the hang sliding through corners under power.
