GPL - do I need 1.2 for online racing?

by evente.. » Fri, 28 Apr 2000 04:00:00

It looks like even though I live in BFE North Carolina, I'll actually be
able to get ISDN service!

Now that I'll have a real internet connection, my interest in online
*** is *way* up.

My biggest question is with GPL - I've got a setup that I'm really happy
with, with lots of sound and graphics patches, and the next-to-last (pre
1.2) GPL patch.  Do I need to go to 1.2 for proper on-line support?
Should I just make a separate install for on-line racing?

TIA!
Kendt

Once u've started racing online u won't race much offline.  Your setup
may well be compatible with 1.2.
yes u need 1.2 to race online

Sorry Kendt, we are going to have to make you unhappy with your
current 1.1 version. The 1.1 patch introduced a timing error that is
adding aprox 1.3 seconds per minute to your lap times, time your
replays with a stop watch and see for yourself. The 1.2 patch is
better in many ways and I believe that you require it installed to
use the latest version of WinVroc. Do it now !

Thanks Don!

I was afraid of some of the stuttering/warping that a few people were
reporting when 1.2 first came out.

Another question - do most of you with fast connections (ISDN/DSL
speed) need to dial-back some of the graphics to keep a consistent
36fps frame rate?  You can do this with another driver specifically for
on-line racing within the same GPL install, right?

I think I'll still be doing alot of off-line - gotta practice!  The only
tracks I can lap consistently are Monza and Watkins Glen, and that's
only in the 1:32 and 1:12 range.  Maybe my Act Labs wheel will help (if
it ever arrives!). Actually, with the 1.1 timing error I may be better
than I think ;)!

Thanks!
Kendt

I find frame rates better online than off due to the fact that GPL only
draws 5 cars when online vs all of them in offline

As mentioned, you do get a better frame rate online. I'm using a P3
550/TNT2/1024*768, cable modem.  I have lots turned off. Just keep
turning off graphics until you get a solid 36. First things: Any
mirror textures, set them to cars only, and turn down the mirror
fresh rate in Core.ini to 4 or 6, and turn off the two lighting
effects.

don't touch mirrors if usin a voodoo card....

I personally run 5 sounds (awe64) crowds, driver texture, arms, dirt,
dust, skidmarks off with everything else on with the exception of just
cars in mirrors.  1024x768

That's the slowest cpu this side of 486's.  How can you do that?
and one of the worst soundcards.   how can you do that?  :)

GPL - do I need 1.2 for online racing?

by Kirk Lan » Fri, 28 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Yes, you will need to go to 1.2.  IMO it's way better than 1.1 anyway.
(There isn't any physics change as some (the more experienced) claim there
was from 1.0 to 1.1 as there was from 1.1 to 1.2.  I wasn't good enough to
notice when 1.1 came out, so it's a moot point for me)
