US Robotics modem problem

by RWF0 » Thu, 19 Jun 1997 04:00:00

I got a new modem the other day (Father's Day gift) and am having problems
now. First of all it's an US Robotics Sportster 33.6 (internal) model #
840.  I race nascar1 using "multi.exe" with a friend in town. I run in DOS
mode of Win 95, rebooted into mode not a window.  (That's a whole 'nuther
problem :))  Nascar2 was aways Too skippy to play on my 14.4 so I haven't
even tried it yet.
At any rate I set it up to use the closest preset string available which
is the USR Sportster 28.8 in the modem setup section of nas1.  When I hit
the answer button it said it couldn't initalize modem.  When I dropped
down to the 14.4 setup it initalized??? Does anyone have a custom string
for the 33.6 or does Papy have updated strings somewhere on-line?
I was hoping with the faster modem my latency of usually 1.1 would drop.
Is this a correct assumption or does modem speed not have to do with
latency in this case?  I was able to get connected a couple times to my
friends computer but after a couple seconds it would drop carrier.  Only
thing I can figure is again, modem string problem, any ideas?
The modem obviously works and I've spent hours on line goofing off so I
know (or assume) it isn't a modem problem.  Any help would greatly be
appreciated.  Hopefully this new modem will also allow me to start racing
N2 via modem soon.  Of course that my not be able to happen with this ol'
486/100.  If not I'll stick to N1 and be happy with that.
Not griping a bit jus racin the best I can with what I got!!!  :)

Thanks,
Roger

Roger,

Try this:       Init String AT&F^M~~~AT&KO
                Dial Prefix ATDT
                Dail Suffix ^M

This should get you connected at 19200 which is the highest Nascar
supports and a latency around .08 to .10

Hope this helps ya,

SG
