GPL patches needed?

by Don Burnett » Mon, 21 Oct 2002 02:43:53

OK, I am finally going to install GPL on my XP Home system.
I have got 1.2 patch from papy, along with the d3d patch and beta opengl patch. I also got the cpu speed patch and disconnect patch.
Is this all I need?
What are most folks running in these days, opengl or d3d?

Thanks,

Ok, I got it installed, and have applied the following in order.
1.2 patch
cpu speed patch
d3d patch.

I have not applied the disconnect patch or the opengl beta patch yet.

As others have reported, the only way I could get it to run was to enable indexing service on the partition GPL was installed in. Otherwise, when I tried to launch GPL it would just kick back to desktop. That's pretty wild, indexing service wasn't even available when GPL was developed was it?
So far, it appears to run fine.
Anyone have any good FF settings for the Momo for GPL?

Man, it has been a long tim since I ran it, I forgot just how tough it was :).

You shouldn't need to apply the disco patch, the CPU speed patch includes
it.

If you're happy with the d3d patch, you don't really need the OpenGL patch,
but if you want to give it a try, use the hacked one from racesimcentral,
it's no worse, and if you have crashes (particularly with nVidia cards)
it'll help solve the problem. The D3D patch can create glitches on screen,
like font problems etc, the OpenGL patch doesn't seem to have these
problems.

FWIW the D3D font problem is hardware (and probably driver) specific.  I
have the problem with the Ti4200 I am using now, but did not have it
with the Radeon I was using before.

I had this problem in D3D with my old Voodoo3, Kyro2 and current GF4 4200.
The Kyro2 wasn't that great a performer in OpenGL so I never tried it, but
OpenGL on the GF4 is great except for the lack of ainsotropic filtering.

I guess the D3D situation deserves a YMMV ;-)

With my new racing computer, I've gotten back
into it. It's a whole different experience with a machine
that can run the resolution at 1600 with the GPLEA cars
and the frame rate staying absolutely maxed out at all times.

I'm having a blast. It sure is nice being able to see the entrance and apexes
from much farther back. It's just a joy to drive. I should be working on
my VRW setups, but all I'm doing is VROC. :-)

I'm running D3D.

Interesting on the D3D thing.  Perhaps ATI's drivers were better than
people gave them credit for.

I haven't tried it, but in OpenGL can't you force anisotropic filtering
on with the nVidia control panel?

Where and how do you get the GPLEA cars?

GPL patches needed?

I've never had an Ati card so I can't compare, but the 3dfx drivers were
pretty good (1.07) and they did it, so it may not be a quality thing, just
the method used.

I have 8x Ainso set in the display settings, I've tried the different levels
too, and it doesn't look like it makes any difference. imo the image looks
nicer in D3D as a result, but OpenGL doesn't get the glitches so it's a
compromise.

If I could cure the font problems, I'd definitely use D3D, but the text is
essential. Nice graphics aren't ;-)
