money off of another company's
program should either

Perhaps you know best, perhaps not.  If the program is illegal, then it's
illegal whether he charges or not.  How is this converter any different
than the others?  Just because he wants to be paid for his work?  He isn't
distributing the Papyrus files, modified or origional.  He is just
providing us with a tool to convert tracks which we have already purchased
to be playable with another simulator.

Was your Daytona Project a convertor, or were you going to distribute the
modified files as a complete package?  I thought that thy were riding your
rear because your " Daytona Project " was a modified Talladega track, and
therefore illegal to re-distribute.  At least no one seems to be riding
those people who have converted Tally, C***te, and Michigan.  I juess I
missed something along the way.  Please explain.

Thanks,

Sorry,

But I need to get in my 2 cents about the Indycar Racing II to NASCAR Racing 2 Track
Conversion Utility.  After being SOUGHT OUT by Daytona after my (now gone) "Daytona Project,"
I should know what's best for EVERYONE.  To my understanding,  making money off of another company's
products without license is illegal.  Thus,  charging a heavy load of cash for a simple
track converter is way out of the question.  I'm suggesting that the program should either
be FREE,  or not exist.  I'm not stating this because I want this program FREE,  I beleieve
it's best for David,  and the rest of us.  Just my opinion.  =()

If track converters are such a big deal as you all make it out to be,  then,  heck....  I
and Jeff Copperthite will come up with something.  =()

Robert,

No-one knows best. Hindsight was the only way for Gerhard to know if
Papyrus would object to his converters, or for Jed to know if anyone would
object to Daytona. Hindsight _and_ treading very carefully. Like it or not
as soon as you start making money from someone else's property they are
going to start taking more of an interest in what you're doing than they
would otherwise.

Quite apart from that just LOOK at the reaction here! It was mad to think
that any money would be made on this. It's hard enough keeping web pages
from being plagiarised all over the place never mind hoping that no-one
will pirate this program. I'm sure some people are honest enough to send
$33 to Dave, but when the full program is one click of the mouse away I
know the vast majority will just download it.

It is a pretty nice piece of work by Dave, needs some polishing in terms of
AI etc, but then so did Gerhard's at first. However, Papyrus sold 16 or so
tracks, network and modem code, release quality AI, graphics engine,
menuing system etc etc for 30. Don't you think 20 is a bit of a crazy
price for probably 1/10000 of the man-hours that Papyrus took to make N2?
66% of the price for less than 1% of the work? I'll pass this one by,
offering Dave my congratulations for some fine hacking I do.

Cheers!
