Wierd Reactor Bug? Help!

by typho » Fri, 03 Jan 1997 04:00:00

Just picked up the Intergraph Reactor, (based on excellent comments
from this newsgroup) and am enjoying it a great deal.

However, while it seems to work fine apart from *A LOT* of flickering
on booting my machine, and Win95 seems to handle it without any
resource conflicts,

EVERY TIME I TRY TO RESTART WINDOWS OR RESTART IN DOS MODE, IT REPORTS
"WINDOWS PROTECTION ERROR. YOU MUST RESTART YOUR MACHINE"
and it plops me to a shut down screen after a button press.(pls
forgive the caps, it's quite infuriating not having DOS mode
available)

I've got the new drivers, I've upgraded the BIOS to 74, and even tried
the "vgafix" with no success. I even get DMADIAG scores in the 90's
range, which seems to be a good performance indicator.Even reinstalled
my old vid card (Diamond Stealth Grpahic 2001 (ArkLogic) and found
that it did not replicate the same "WINDOWS PROTECTION ERROR" that the
Reactor seems to cause.

I'm at a loss. I've tried contacting Intergraph, their phone lines
won't let me hold that long without leaving a voice mail, which they
have yet to answer. I would appreciate any help this newsgroup has to
offer.

Vital Stats:
P133 16MB RAM
MB:SuperMicro P55T2S with AMIBIOS

Thanks in advance!

I have had the same flickering with my Screamin' 3D.  I have not had the
Windows protection fault, so I cannot comment on that.  Hope you get it
sorted out.

I got the same problem when trying to upgrade to 64mb of ram on my system.
It worked well in dos with 32 or 48 mb, but locked my system up bad in dos
with
64mb.
Intergraph's support said that they had no report of such lock ups.I just
don't understand the
"windows protection error"either.
Looking for good anwser for this problem myself.

Until some later fix you will have to live with the flickering.  I
suspect that some components of your previous video card's drivers are
still alive in your Win95 registery or in the system.ini, win.ini files.

If you have a folder where your old video drivers still reside, try
renaming it so Win95 can't find its components.  However, I am sure
there still some traces left in the Windows & System folders.  Try to
ferret them out and move these files to another folder (in case you need
to move them back).  You can check the Properties of a file and look at
the Company Name in the Version tab.  This will usually have the name of
your video card company if they are part of their driver package.

Currently using a Gateway Vivtron 15, was running Reactor in 1024
16-bit color. Tried varying the resloution and changing the refresh
rates, no success. The card went back to Intergraph for replacement.

Any other ideas? (thanks for replying BTW)

Thanks for the wish-well. My Reactor went back to Intergraph yesterday
for replacement. The tech support at Intergraph said that the "Windows
Protection" problem was undocumented. Hopefully all I had was a buggy
card.

Hmm, although I have some trepidation about tinkering the SYSTEM.INI
and WIN.INI files, I'll keep your suggestion in mind while I await a
replacement for my Reactor to arrive. I'm hoping that the problem was
merely a squirrley vid card, (which I've seen before)

Thanks in abundance!

Wierd Reactor Bug? Help!

by David A. Dirnberg » Sat, 11 Jan 1997 04:00:00

I received my Reactor card in November, and it worked fine, except for
no Indyfast with my Cyrix P120.  I was able to restart in DOS without
problems.  In late December, I installed Macafee Anti-Virus software
on my system, and it seems every since then, I too got the Windows
protection error, however, since I don't use DOS through Windows 95,
and I have been busy during the holidays, I didn't even think this was
a bug that would have any impact.  It definately started after
installing the Anti-Virus software.  So, anyone else who is having
this problem, are you also using Macafee?  Maybe this is a clue for
the Intergraph people.  I am still running the old Reactor BIOS,
having no reason to upgrade yet.  I run a Cyrix P120 with 16 meg and
am not sure of my motherboard, but I do know that I am running Award
BIOS.  I haven't tried running ICR2 since this problem, but will do
further researce and report anything to this string.  Until then, I am
open to suggestions.

I am having the same problem as Typhoon, however I didn't have the
problem until I installed Macafee Anti-Virus software, so I don't
think the problem is with my old Diamond Stealth 64 drivers.  I will
however try to dig them up as suggested, but I really feel this might
not be the answer.  By the way, my screen always flickered alot on
start up, I just ignored it, since it didn't seem to bother anything.
