Reactor 3d and SciTech Display Doctor - Any Help???

by Jason R Smi » Wed, 26 Feb 1997 04:00:00

Ok,

Here's the problem.  I have the following system:

P200MMX w/ 16megs of RAM
REACTOR 3D Video Card w/ 4megs of Ram

The first thing that I noticed was this.  When playing the Need For
Speed Special Edition in DOS (because Windows95 still gives it a hit),
I am not able to play ANY of the video clips that are within the game
(Intro, etc..). This does not happen with any other games that play
video clips.  I contacted EA, and they were no help.  I re-installed
the game under Windows95 and the video clips ALL run just fine through
there.

My next step was to install Display Doctor.  The install program
recognized the Reactor, but whenever I ran any games, the resoultion
was limited to about the top 3-4 inches of the screen, kind of like
the screen has been squeezed together.  The videos in Need for Speed
ran just fine, in full screen, but the game itself did not this time.
I proceeded to run Quake, which did the same thing.  The game was
limited to 3-4 inches of horizontal pixels.  I unistalled display
doctor, and am back to my original problem.

One other thing that I have noticed is that if I attempt to run any
games off of a floppy boot disk, I can NEVER use DMA access for the
games.  DMA will only work if windows95 is shutdown to MS-Dos mode.

I appreciate any help in advance.  Thanks!!

Jason

I also forgot to add that I have a TYAN s1470 motherboard with the VX
chipset and 512K of pipeline burst cache.

<snip>

Sorry can't help with early problems list about display and videos.

This is something that Tyan has done with it's Award BIOS (turn off DMA
PCI mode in DOS).  However, just run DMADIAG as part of your boot and it
should work just fine.

I think Eric has this utility tucked away in his NASCAR utility page,
check <http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~ebusch/>.

That seemed to take care of the video problems at the intro, but I
still cant get the videos to work properly that play when you win a
race.

I have E-mailed Electronic Arts to no avail.  When I win a race, the
video is limited to the top 3 or 4 inches of the screen.  I can hear
the music playing fine, but other than that, it is just a bunch of
britely colored pixels.

I'm right in the middle of the same problem... but mine freezes up when the
install gets to the sound board setup (before getting to the page, not when
trying to test)
