That was previous to September 11, 2001. Now PS2, XBox and other "dual
use" technology can't be legally exported to certain countries without
approval of the US government. There was a Law & Order episode about this
topic a couple months ago actually because their writers thought it an
interesting topic. Their writers had owners of a NY area toy store owner get
his house searched secretly by the FBI because they were exporting PS2s to
Albania in defiance of a US government order.
Now, having said that, I'm sure most countries where there would be more
than a few sales for PS2, XBox etc. are approved. While countries, like
Albania, wouldn't have much of a market anyway. Plus, Sony's a multinational
corporation based also in Japan. So, the Sony America branch won't be able
to export PSP etc. to any country they want without government approval, the
Japanese arm of Sony would, unless Japan's government has a similar
anti-terrorism law.
You can be sure that the US would strongly reccomend to Japan that it
adopt the same restrictions regarding computer technology imports as the
US... Of course Japan hasn't always listend. I seem to recall a bit of a
disagreement between the US and Mitsubishi after it was discovered that
Mitsubishi was manufacturing submarine propellors for the USSR...
Despite all this, I really can't see the PSP being classified as a
"supercomputer" or containing enough technology to end up on the "do not
export" list.
