Win95 and Thrustmaster GP1 Problem

by Nathan Brop » Thu, 14 May 1998 04:00:00

I own two  Grand Prix 1 (GP1) steering wheels that will not be
recognized in Win 95 and Win 95 games.  My 1st GP1 is an old version
used with the Axis Converter the other GP1 is a new version that does
not require the Axis Converter.   I have tried both wheels on two
different system (not at the same time of corse).

My 1st system is a Pentium 200mhz (non-MMX)/Giga-Byte GA586ATS
motherboard running Win95 with Direct X 5.  The game port used the 1st
system is a Creative Labs (regular non-PNP) Sound Blaster 16 sound
card.   When I attempt to calibrate or see if the either GP1
steering wheel is working properly the Win95/DirectX 5 Game
Controllers in Control Panel says the steering wheel is "Not
Connected".  Upon checking that the connection is secure (in the case
of the older GP1 I tired it with and with out the Axis Converter)  I
recieve the same message.

I downloaded Thrustmaster "ProPanel" to see if I could detect either
steering wheel.  For both wheels I get the status message "Error".  I
double checked that the SB16 game port was configured correctly and
not conflicting which it was not.  The game port drivers used is
msjstisk.drv (4.0.950) and vjoyd.vxd (4.00.950).  I ran the
Thrustmaster TMScope DOS gameport utility and both steering wheels
reacted properly. The X/Y cross hairs work find and the port speed was
at the highest level.

When I run DOS based games (MicroProse World Ciruit (Grand Prix) and
World Circuit Racing Grand Prix Racing II) on the 1st system they are
able to run and use the steering wheels fine but with most Win 95 game
(Microsoft Cart Presion Racing and Sierra/Papyrus CART Racing) I can
not get either wheel.to function.

The 2nd system is a AMD K6  running at 225mhz (75mhz bus)/FIC 2007
motherboard also running Win95 with DirectX 5.  The game port used on
this system is a Creative Labs standard (not value edition) AWE32 PNP
sound card.   Again when I attempt to calibrate or see if the steering
wheel is working properly under "Game Controllers"  it says the
steering wheel is not connected.  Again the connection were solid and
secure (in the case of the older GP1 try with and with out the Axis
Converter) and the same message appears.   The Thrustmaster "ProPanel"
again shows both wheels as "Error" status.    The drivers used on the
2nd system are msjstisk.drv (4.0.950) and vjoyd.vxd (4.05.0155).

Once again when I run the Thrustmaster TMScope DOS gameport utility
and both steering wheels configure with no problem and the port speed
is peaked at the highest level.  On this when I run DOS based games
(Sierra/Papyrus Indy Car Racing Rendition enhanced MicroProse World
Ciruit (Grand Prix), and MicroProse World Circuit Racing Grand Prix
Racing II) on the 2nd system I can use both steering wheels just fine
but with most Win 95 games (Microsoft Cart Presion Racing and
Sierra/Papyrus CART Racing) do not recognize the either steering
wheel.

The only Win95 racing game (demo) I can run on either system and
Papyrus Grand Prix Legends (ver 0.0.0.5).  I switch the "Joystick
Driver" to optimized and I can calibrate the steering wheel.

Is this a common problem with Win 95 game and the GP1 steering wheel?
Any suggestion will be greatly apprecaited!

Thank You,
Nathan Brophy

Win95 and Thrustmaster GP1 Problem

I had the same problem. Get  service pack 1 from MS (upgrades to Win95a)
and it'll work.

Win95 and Thrustmaster GP1 Problem

I have not had the same problem with my trusty old GP1, but I'm running
Win95b. I did get the "Not Connected" message once, but then I realized that
the steering wheel cord had come out of the dash.

Good Luck ,

Win95 and Thrustmaster GP1 Problem

I experienced exactly the same problem. You can still use your GP1 for
Win95 games, though. What you need to do is to configure it manually. Go
to the original Win95 controller icon (not the Thrustmaster pro panel).
Create a new controller device by selecting "custom" and then tick the
box "is a race car controller". You will then be able to callibrate the
GP1, and to play Win95 games.

Good luck...

Mark.

PS: Somebody suggested installing the Service pack from MS. Have you
tried that? If it works, let us know.
