THRUSTMASTER GP1 PROBLEM

by nup » Tue, 24 Nov 1998 04:00:00

The throttle on my TM GP1 wheel when fully open "bounces" ie my computer
gets a false reading as if I am opening and closing the throttle constantly.
Can anyone tell me if this is a problem with the controller? or my computer?
i have downloaded TM's control panel with little noticeable difference and
am constantly re-calibrating to try and beat this problem.

I also had the same problem.

Clean the pot with some contact-cleaner and the problem was gone.

Your pot needs cleaning (not this is not the kettle kinda pot, nor is it
the kind you can put in a bowl and smoke...)

To clean the pots on Thrustmaster products, get some Tuner/Switch
Cleaner and Lubricant from an electronics supply store. Open up the
housing on the unit and spray the insides of the pot (short for
potentiometer). I usually direct the spray (via the tube extenstion for
the spray nozzle) into the openings of the pot where the solder lugs
are. Then move the wheel or pedal through its full range 4-6 times to
work the cleaner over all the contacts. If the unit was acting up quite
a bit, you may want to give it a second "cleaning" before sealing up the
unit and heading back out to the track.

There are pots for each pedal and for each lever on the back of the GP1
wheel. The latter can usually be cleaned by finding a "squarish" hole on
the pot and directing the spray through the hole. You should be able to
clean the pots for the levers without disassembling anything on your
GP1, however to get to the steering wheel pot you will need to remove
the housing cover of the wheel.

[For the non-electronics or non-mechanical racers out there, the pot is
the "silver" cylinder that the is directly behind the wheel inside the
housing. It should have some wires connected to it and the wheel is
connected its plastic shaft. There should be a "shaft" coming out of one
end of the cylinder.]

THRUSTMASTER GP1 PROBLEM

I have used GP1's for years.  Unfortunately, they wear out a bit
faster than some of the more expensive wheels.  Yours is toast,
my friend.  You may be able to repair it, but I admit I have
never tried.  When mine dies, I just buy a new one (actually, I
buy two at a time now).

If you have GP2 from Microprose, it's easy enough to test if it's
dead.  Go to Hockenheim and full throttle down one of the long
straights.  Then, go to the telemetry and map the throttle.  If
it's glitching/stuttering... your toast, just get a new wheel.

Anyone know of any other higher-quality wheels (not that GP1 is
*bad*, but you know what I mean) that uses the paddles for
throttle/brake??  I am too damn big (and uncoordinated) to use
pedals under a desk.  I have to use the paddles, even though it
can make your throttle hand hurt after a couple hours straight.

Good luck with your wheel.  Do you like it in GPL??

I requested replacement pots for my GP1 from their web page (I don't know
how I ever would have replaced them) and they sent me a new wheel in the
mail!
