Problems with GP2 and Thrustmaster GP1 wheel

by Paul Dudl » Wed, 14 Jan 1998 04:00:00

I have just bought GP2 and loaded it onto my PC. It's a great
sim but I always have problems calibrating the steering wheel.
I usually have to either restart the game 2 or 3 times, or
restart the PC AND the game 2 or 3 times before the wheel
calibrates OK. BTW, I installed GP2 in Windows95 and I am using
a Thrustmaster GP1 wheel.

I already have Nascar2 on my PC and I have never had any problems
calibrating the wheel for that (it is also running in Windows 95).

With the wheel there are instructions on how you should not use
the converter that comes with the wheel and that you should load
the T2.CON file from the GP2 CD, however when I do this it won't
calibrate at all. I have tried installing GP2 thru DOS and Windows95,
with and without the converter, with and without the T2.CON file.
The only setup that works at all is thru Windows95, with the converter
but without the T2.CON file, using the first "Not Used" option in
the advanced control options menu.

Other problems that sometimes happen are;

The wheel calibrates OK but when I start a race or practice session
I change into 1st gear, accelerate, hear the engine revs rise, but
I don't go anywhere (if I am in a race when this happens I have to
rely on another car hitting me from behind - then I start moving and
the car behaves normally).

The steering and accelerator calibrates OK but the brake acts the
same as the accelerator.

Any help would be appreciated as when I do get the game going it
is great. I don't think it is a problem with the wheel because
Nascar2 calibrates OK first time every time.

Problems with GP2 and Thrustmaster GP1 wheel

One of those annoying "I have exactly the same set up as you and I
don't have any problems" type posts !

I have just bought a GP1 and it has the adapter "built-in" according
to slip of paper that came with it.  Consequently the T2.CON will
not work as it assumes that the pedals (paddles on GP1) are on
the X axis of Joystick2 whereas they are actually (courtesy of the
"adaptor") on the Y axis of Jostick1.

Some suggestions -

I run GP2 in DOS mode - create a shortcut and select the
"Use DOS Mode"  in the Progams-Advanced Properties setting.
You will need to make sure if any drivers need to be loaded for
this to work (CD-Rom, souncard, mouse, whatever).  I think
you'll either know how to do this or you won't have a clue
what I'm talking about !  Sorry.

Use the adaptor (if you've got one) and use the calibration
for a 2-axis 2-button joystick instead of a wheel.

Could be a joystick port problem - apparently some faster PC's
have trouble with some souncard joystick ports.  A dedicated
joystick port is alleged the only solution to this.  The fact
that Nascar2 works would suggest that this probably isn't the
problem.

I'd go for running it under DOS.

The T2.con will not work with the converter as it expects the gas and
brake to be on a different axis from the steering.

Did you calibrate and set it up in GP2 as "control driven"?

Also if you insist on running through Win95, get Thrustmaster's Propanel
applet.  It will provide a greatly improved calibration for Win95.  Get
it at:
