GPL & Win 98

by Matt Star » Tue, 30 Jun 1998 04:00:00

I have installed Windows 98 and have gotten GPL to work for the most
part.  The only problem is that when I take off in first gear and run it
up to red line it is like I am doing 200+ mph.  For some reason it has
gone into turbo mode.

I am trying to move back to Win95, but when I install my bus master
drivers it gives me a general protection fault.

I have a P2-400, 128 MB RAM, Viper V330 AGP video, Monster 3D II 12 MB,
Abit BX6 board.

Any ideas would be helpfull.

thanks
matt

Re-format the HDD and re-install W95.
Drastic, and not what you wanted to hear, I know, but certainly the
cleanest way to go.

And remember....in future, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Re-formatting the hard disk in not a problem.  I am having problems
getting the bus master stuff working on my board after I install my
video card drivers.  I am running a BX6 and Viper V330.

Hate to tell you Matt, but I think you need an upgrade pretty badly! No way that
outdated hardware can run a super OS like Win 98.

No change of heart......if a user already has W95 and it's running okay
(well, "as well as can be expected", as they say in hospitals!) then my
advice is to leave it alone.
If a user has bought a new computer then it is going to have W98
included and, if so, there is little likelihood of the user reverting to
an OS that has been superseded.

My previous post simply pointed out that yes, GPL can be run under
W98.....it didn't advocate changing to W98! :o)

Sorry, Matt, but I have no suggested solution for that as I haven't yet
come across that particular problem.

Why are you installing bus master drivers???, the microsoft ones are more
than adequate.

Do you use the default SVGA drivers that come with win95/98?

Win 95 does not know how to handle the PCI bridge, AGP, UDMA, or the BX
chipset by itself.  One needs to install the drivers that came with the
motherboard so that thigs work properly.  I can live without the bus
mastering, but it is slower without it.  The bus mastering enables the UDMA
which allows almost twice the burst transfer rate.
