GPL video card ?

by Dway » Sat, 04 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I have a Diamond Stealth 3 video card & can't seem to get it to work with GPL
or NASCAR3. Does these games not suppport this card? If not will someone
recommend a card that will. It has to be a PCI card. I did have a Banshee and
took it out for the Diamond too upgrade but I think I made a bad choice.

Yep, bad choice, sorry to say.  Get a voodoo3 pci.  Either 2000 or 3000.

Voodoo 3 is best choice for GPL and they are about 70 for V3 2000 which is
more than fast enough.

voodoo3 2000 is fine for GPL. Firstly reviews indicate that it can be
overclocked almost as far as the 3000 + in any case on GPL I see no
performance increase between standard 143MHz and the 3k clock of 166MHz.

another option if you want to save a few $'s is the STB Velocity 100.
This is the same as the V3 except (i) it has only 8MB of memory and (ii)
the drivers only enable one of the V3 graphics engines .... however at
the www.anandtech.com review you can find the registry entry required to
override this.

Final option - if you're happy with the existing video card for other
apps and consider a V3 to be a downgrade for other games then you can
pick up a V2 1000 card pretty cheap (around $40-50 after rebate) - this
is a voodoo2 card so operates alongside existing video card so that
you'd only use it for GPL and other glide games. Performance is about
half that of V3 so probably only a viable proposition if existing card
is much faster than a V3.

Hope this helps. BTW, running GPL in software video mode is only useful
in that it tells you you need to by a voodoo accelerator :-)

GPL video card ?

Thanks for all the advice that I got on my ?
I picked up a Voodoo3 3000 PCI card tonight. One other thing though, I got a
Force RS and noticed that the frame rate dropped really bad after I hooked it
up. Is there anything I can do to fix this? The new Voodoo card helps some but
it still has a problem keeping up. I was told that direct x 7a might help. Is
this true?
Thanks again everyone!

Compaq Presario 5184
380mhz AMD K6-2
