Which one would you go for?  Any thoughts on GeForce 64Mb MX400?

For GPL, that card will absolutely rock...

However, if you look on www.pricewatch.com you can get GTSs and Pros for
very cheaply too, and despite the smaller memory (on the 32MB models),
they're faster by a good margin than any MX board.

I'd recommend the GeForce 2 Ti 64MB...don't get e***d at the $66, some
retard listed a MX200 (which is one crappy price) as a MXTI200.  PCI too. =P
But $85 is certainly under $100, and that's one fast card...

I bought a GF3 Ti 200 for $150 and got a $50 rebate at Best Buy. Card is
great for GPL.

Carl,

Get the best GF2 you can find; the GF3s have stuff GPL doesn't need, can't
use, and--for the sane buck--are slower w. older ganes like GPL.

With the release of the Ti series and GF4 around the corner (Febuary?) the
GF3 are becoming a pretty good deal. Granted for stricly GPL use there is
alot of features they have that won't get used. They still are over the $100
mark in question and will be for some time, but they are getting pretty
reasonable. I just bought a Gainword GF3 golden sample (clocked just under a
Ti 500) for $250 in early December. I paid more than that for my first TNT
card !

I have an AGP version of the above, and for GPL it is extremely good...
I certainly have no issues with the frame rate.

Being UK-based, I paid about 45 for mine around three months ago...
guessing at the exchange rate and price reductions I'd say $60-90 would
be a good ballpark for one, depending on whether you want top-quality
brand name stuff or not.

Personally I wouldn't go for anything more unless you're playing the
very latest games, but that's mostly my opinion because
a) I don't have much money to spare on computing resources.
b) I don't play very many "latest and greatest" computer games,
preferring to stick with old but good stuff (like, er, GPL)

If you wanted a system that's scalable, go for the biggest GF2/3 you can
afford, as it should last you (I did this years back with a Voodoo 2,
and it was still bearable when I bought the GeForce, even if I wouldn't
go back ;-) ) a fair amount of time excepting massive jumps in 3D
performance in the near future.

However, if you're going to be sticking with the same components and
games, the MX400 would be my value/budget choice.

Regards,
        Matt

Gotta disagree with you on the GF3.  I run it at 1280x1024 with 4X
antialiasing and 32-tap anisotropic filter and the effect is outstanding (on
an Athlon 1.33).  With these settings it looks markedly better than
2048x1536 on my 21" monitor and the frame rates with all of the add-ons are
awesome.  The GF3 and maybe the Radeon 8500 are the only cards with the
muscle to do this amount of AA and aniso.

If it's the PNY model, which I'm guessing it is (for that price), it
has S-video out.

I have one and it's fantastic.

Are you getting any weird visual artifacts in the menus?  Regardless
of the drivers I use on my GF3, if I use 2x/4x or Quincunx(sp) FSAA
the menus in GPL slowly bleed away until they're totally unusable.
It's really weird and nice if I want to feel like I'm tripping but
totally unusable.

Yech.  I built one box with a Kyro II...and I won't ever touch that chipset
again.  The drivers blow chunks.

Are these better or worse than GeForce 64Mb MX400 at  $79.99 after rebate?

I used to get the same artifacts you describe when using the 12.41 Nvidia
drivers.  I just lived with it since it looked great on the track and I
could "reset" the race screen by going into a sub menu and coming back.
However, I have since switched to the 21.83's (tried 23.11's and had
problems in other games so I went back to 21.83's) and the menu fade problem
is gone and I gained more frames too.  There are occasional glitches and
screen flickering when coming back from the track but I just go into a sub
menu and that fixes it.
