GPL with MSFF wheel and PDPI L4

by Ruud van Ga » Tue, 18 May 1999 04:00:00

Hi all,

Ok this ng is filled with wheel questions (I really do think a
rec.autos.gpl would not hurt), but here's another one:

I just invested some money in a PDPI L4 gamecard which works great
with my T2 wheel and single-axis pedals. Now the wheel is ~4 years old
and I am considering upgrading to a MS FF wheel (since GPL 1.1
supports FF).
However, I heard that, being MS, the wheel is somewhat incompatible
(using non-100k-pots)? Anybody got it to work with a PDPI L4?

Thanks,

I'm not sure about the compatibility issue but you might like this tidbit
of info. I don't recall where I read this the other day but an article
about polling cycles had msff way into the unacceptable range, the act
labs was the best ( I think). You should research the technical aspects a
bit more before biting the ff bullet. I will wait a while more myself for
N2000, I "was" thinking it was a lock to buy.

The MS FF Wheel lack pots alltogether as it is digital, but output to
the gameport is the same as any other wheel/joystick.
However, it needs a MIDI compatible port for the FF signal.
Force Feeeback Feedback?  :-)
I use a SB 16, not sure if the PDPI L4 is capable... Anyone else?

The MS FF Wheel does NOT work with the PDPI, per Mike at PDPI and the
FAQ. Don't know exactly why, but maybe because there are no pots in
it. I believe its an optical reader, like the Precision Pro stick
line.

The PDPI L4 will not work with the Microsoft FF Wheel because it requires
MIDI capabilities of the port it is connected to.  The PDPI is a great card
but it has no MIDI.  I have tested the L4 with quite a few controllers but
most of the Microsoft Sidewinder controllers will not work.
