PDPI L4, Jitters and GPL

I received my PDPI L4 yesterday, installed it today, and now my jitter
problems are much more severe than they were with the gameport on my
Soundblaster Live.  Has anyone had a negative experience with the PDPI?

A GPL wheel configuration question... In GPL if I use the 'Generic Driver'
the resolution of my wheel seems to be far greater than if I use the "Direct
Input" driver.  The Generic Driver offers a value range of 5381-227211 on
Axis 0 while the Direct Input driver only offers a value range of 3-248.  Do
the numbers returned indicate a greater sensitivity with the Generic Driver
or are the units of measurement simply different?

One other thing...When using the PDPI the Generic Driver is very jittery,
but the Direct Input driver is rock solid.  Is Direct X doing some kind of
clean up on it's own, or does the Papy generic driver bypass the PDPI driver
thereby negating the advantages of the PDPI?

Thats odd, I just got my PDPI card Friday, installed that night with no
problem. I used to use the generic  for GPL, but now I use the Directx
and after calibration my needles don't move at all, rock steady. I raced
a league race this morning and was rack steady, the car went where I
pointed it. The only drawback is I have to rework my setups to make up
for the PDPI accuracy!

Have you gone into control panel/joystick and made sure you have chosen
the PDPI card, not standard gamecard?

Using the Direct Input driver my needles are also rock steady.  I have a
feeling that that when I select Direct Input then GPL is using the PDPI
drivers, and when I select Generic Driver then GPL is using the standard
gamecard drivers.  I guess I will continue to use the Direct Input driver
from here on out.

What is the range of values that the GPL Direct Input driver is reporting
for you?    I'm assuming that my 2-248 on axis 0 is about what I should be
seeing.

You're referring to the "Advanced" tab under game controllers?  If so, then
yes I do have PDPI selected.

Thanks for the reply.

I get 25 - 126 range for my steering, I forget what the others are right
now. I'll try to remember to look next time I recalibrate in GPL, which
shouldn't be very soon :)

0 - 255 is a typical reading for the PDPI with 100K pots, so your settings
are about right. You are right, when GPL uses the generic driver it polls
the joystick in "analogue" mode, thus the PDPI goes into "compatibility"
mode. To get the most out of the PDPI you sould be using DirectInput where
the drivers are optimised to use the PDPI in "digital" mode.

Yes to your last question.  256 is the maximum range with pdpi so 3-248
is very close to perfect.

Here's a copy of the email act-labs sent me after my order through PDPI
went south. They couldn't keep up so they turned it over to act-labs. You
won't find the info on the act-labs site for the reason stated below. Hope
this helps. With shipping, it's 68.00
