What recommendations can anybody give me for an analogue FF wheel which will
be compatible with my PDPI L4?

Thanks

No such thing.  FF is either via the RS232 serial port or USB.  The L4
is DB15 gameport only.

There are also the DirectInput Force Feedback Wheels such as the Saitek,
Microsoft and InterAct wheels that connect using the gameport.  They will
not work with a gameport that is not part of a soundcard that also doubles
as a MIDI port.  None of these will work with the PDPI.

Forget it, a FF wheel either works as midi port (MS Sidewinder) or
others
thru USB or SERIAL (Logitech), the later uses a analog to digital
converter before the signal is sent to the PC, and USB is simply great!
