Having being fired up by this NG, I have returned to GPL after 2 years. My
original 3DFX card has now been replaced by a Hercules GForce 2 Ultra, but I
am surprised by how D3D has slowed the game down. I have both the D3D patch
and upto date GPL patch, but even so I am achieving frame rates of just
25-30, rather than the full 36.
I have tried resolution of 1024 to 1280, but this seems to make little
difference. Its the 'graphics bias' slider that really slows down the FPS.
Perhaps I am just being optimistic thinking my machine could play with this
slider at full? I have an Athlon 900 with 256mb ram, and run with all 19
cars.. I have installed some***pit mods, but only use 2d wheels.
Am I missing a setting here that will allow me to play with everything
maxed, or should I be using the Open GL patch?
Any help appreciated.

Your probably missing something, I run GPL on a Celeron 566 at 850 mhz, and
a GeForce2 MX 32 mb vid card, and get full 36 fps.
Make sure you have edited your core.ini per the d3d patch instructions, also
check that vsynch is off in your d3d properties for your card,
Don't know if***pit mods would have an effect on it.

Something's wrong somewhere.  You ought to be getting the full 36fps most
all the time, even at full detail and resolutions up to 1280x at least with
your setup using D3D.

I've been running under those conditions for ages with a P3/800 and the
GF256 I had before getting a GF3.  I'm even using the 3d wheels, every
***pit mod and a car mod for every car running.  My fps rarely drop below
36fps except at the start of some races and then only briefly and rarely
below 30fps.

Like someone else said, make sure vsync is off.  Oh, and don't even think
about using any form of FSAA.

1600x at all times except for a few seconds at the start of races at SOME
circuits.  That's with a GeForce 2 Ultra and 1.2 Athlon.  I've got the
detail bias, the number of cars, FF, and number of sound channels all set to
max. FSAA is set to the driver default, i.e. let application decide.

What version of the nvidia drivers are you using?

Have you got these settings in your core.ini-

[ Int Profile Values ]
value3 = Direct3D7:D3DDevice:0
value4 = Direct3D7:TossHighestMip:0
value5 = Direct3D7:TrilinearFiltering:0
value6 = Direct3D7:DoubleMirrorResWidth:0
value7 = Direct3D7:DoubleMirrorResHeight:0
value8 = Direct3D7:DirectMirrorRendering:0
value9 = Direct3D7:DisableZBuffer:0

[ Direct3D7 ]
D3DDevice = 1
TossHighestMip = 0
TrilinearFiltering = 1
DoubleMirrorResWidth = 1
DoubleMirrorResHeight = 1
DirectMirrorRendering = 1
DisableZBuffer = 0

?

One other thing--if you're using any tweakers like Rivatuner or nVmax,
you'll get an option to set aniso filtering up to 32-tap.  If you go that
high, that'll put a hit on things.  If you have that set at all you might
want to stay with 8- or 16-tap for most apps.

And if you want to compare GPL's OpenGL with D3D, then go ahead--no harm
done.  But unlike a lot of apps, GPL does NOT run better in OGL on nVidia
cards than it does in D3D, at least based on my experience.

On nvidia cards, GPL is MUCH better on D3D than OGL as Jerry said.
