I've been running under those conditions for ages with a P3/800 and the
GF256 I had before getting a GF3. I'm even using the 3d wheels, every
***pit mod and a car mod for every car running. My fps rarely drop below
36fps except at the start of some races and then only briefly and rarely
below 30fps.
Like someone else said, make sure vsync is off. Oh, and don't even think
about using any form of FSAA.

What version of the nvidia drivers are you using?

One other thing--if you're using any tweakers like Rivatuner or nVmax,
you'll get an option to set aniso filtering up to 32-tap. If you go that
high, that'll put a hit on things. If you have that set at all you might
want to stay with 8- or 16-tap for most apps.
And if you want to compare GPL's OpenGL with D3D, then go ahead--no harm
done. But unlike a lot of apps, GPL does NOT run better in OGL on nVidia
cards than it does in D3D, at least based on my experience.
