GPL Graphics problem

I have a PII 450 w/ 128megs of RAM and an ATI Rage Pro.  All I am able to
run GPL in is 640x480 in Software rendering mode.  Even then I am getting a
frame rate of 20 tops.  I have tryed the OpenGL and have gotten a whopping 2
fps.  Any help?  Or has Sierra again sold a product that wasn't advertised
on the box?

I suppose you can read it as that.  For the present (and maybe the
future), you either need a 3DFX or Rendition card to achieve maximum
frame rate peformance from GPL.  Since you already have a good 2d/3d
card, I would suggest getting a Voodoo2 card to work in conjunction with
it.  (BTW:  Sierra doesn't have any "vested" interests in 3DFX cards.)

Even with your system, the only way you are going to dramitcally increase
your frame is by getting a Rendition based video card or a 3dfx video card.
     I have a P2/350.  I didn't have diddly squat in fps until I got a Voodoo2.
 Now I get 36/37 fps.

GPL *really wants* a 3Dfx or Rendition 3D card (it will give you
the full 36 fps in 800x600 [or higher] that the sim is capable of).
It is in the "recommended" portion of the system specs, which is
debatable.  OTOH, think of the poor guys using software mode with a
lesser CPU...

Evan, apparently there are OpenGL drivers and then there are
OpenGL drivers.  I've seen your specific problem mentioned before
(horrible OpenGL FPS), and if I recall correctly it boils down to
getting an OpenGL driver specific for your card, if available.
Check the ATI website or do a websearch.  I think there's a
driver involved at the Papy website also.

Hopefully someone will jump in with the specific info, but in the
interim I'd suggest you dig around a bit on the OpenGL issue.
And the suggestions to pick up a Voodoo2 card would be the
ultimate overall solution.  I think it would be a safe guess that
the majority of us hooked on high-end games/sims are running a
3dfx card.

What is the minimum memory I should get?

Might as well get 12 megs now, since you'll be able to "SLI" it when u win
the lottery next year :) (plus 8's are going out & 12's have really come
down in price)

Been there, done that, bought a new computer.  Stupid(for a game!), but
effective... :)

I've currently got a 200 Pentium, 32 RAM and a Voodoo1 card, running
with 8 opponents and about half the graphics I get about 18-22 FPS. The
question is - which should I upgrade next? Should I get more RAM,
upgrade to a voodoo2 or upgrade the motherboard/CPU??
Obviously the CPU is the best but most expensive and I'm really after a
cheaper short term solution. Would it be worth getting a Voodoo2 or is
the bottleneck with the processor and RAM?

Thanks

The best approach is to upgrade everything!  However, a voodoo2 won't
help much in you situation as it relies on some CPU horsepower.  The
quickest and easiest upgrade would be a new Rendition card.  But, I
don't know how much more in frame rate you would really achieve, as
running with AI again needs CPU horsepower.  First upgrade your CPU/MB
and while you are at it, plug in at least 64 mb of RAM.

I have a Pentium MMX 200MHz, 64MB RAM, and a Vodoo1 card. I get about
the same frame rate as you. SO more RAM is not going to help. A voodo2
may help, but I really think your money would be best used in a new
Motherboard and CPU purchase.
