GPL - Arcade versus in-car view

by markgam » Tue, 28 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Since the converter came out I have been using the F10 arcade view to
help navigate the new tracks, and as much as this might be GPL heresy, I
find myself really enjoying it. On my P2-400 with a Voodoo2, in-car
view frame rates for most tracks are in the upper ***s at the start and
run in the upper twenties to low thirties during a race. This is with
all graphic options on and the slider about half-way. I have tried
reducing some of the options, but I feel that takes away the flavor of
the sim.

When I use the F10 arcade view, I average in the low thirties at the
start and max out at 36 fps for the rest of the time. The only exception
is Monaco and even there my starts are in the twenties versus the low
***s seen in the in-car view.

The added bonus is getting to watch your own suspension flex and the
sparks that get generated when you fly off the curbs!

Anyone else want to admit to being a secret F10 viewer?? ;-)

I have always found the F10 view helpful to learn Papy tracks, pick out
braking and turn in points, etc. But I much prefer to race from the in car
view.

personally i hate that view and wonder why they ever  put in the
title.

I have heard though that at least one of the hotshoes uses it to set
his record times round monza!

F-10?
YUK!!
btw- turn down that detail slider!
I get  36 fps in 1024x768 on my p2-400, with everything but drivers arms on.
works great!

I only use F10 on the grid to see who's along side me.  Find it difficult to
put fast lap limes in with F10 though, and I prefer the***pit view anyway

GPL - Arcade versus in-car view

F10 view is definately easier but if it's faster in the end i don't know
i know someone that drove a 1:27,28 after 4 weeks of gpl in F10 view
the problem he has now is that he can't drive in***pit view and doesn't
have the
mirrors, which can be a real pain in the ass driving online.

Well, I know I drive with the arcade view exclusively. I find I
can more easily see how the car is reacting to my input, in
particular my polar movement through turns. I find it helps to
make up for the total lack of sensory input on many fronts - no
peripheral vision, no sense of gravity/intertia/balance, no
touch. I never could, for some reason, figure out *why* my car
was reacting the way it did many times in the in car view. Once I
switched to the F10 viewthough, I saw just what the heck I was
screwing up so badly.

GPL - Arcade versus in-car view

Formerly I used the F10-view to learn a track. Overview (or should I say
Outlook?) is much better.
For slow systems Frame rate is much better - an excellent excuse for F10
If you are quite new to GPL (less than one year or so) F10 is helpful to see car
reactions earlier and easier. I the later state of ***ion this gets less
important.
What I REALLY miss in F10: review mirrors.
Also the feeling isn't right for me.
