Hi

Not to be insulting, but I tried NASCAR 2
and found myself going loop after loop
and some interesting collision which accident cars disappeared
right before your eyes

but really after 8 sittings
I could not find any of the enthusiasm of this NG
over NASCAR

Can any of you NASCAR fans enlighten me ?
which part of NASCAR really challenge you.

as far as I know , it is gas on , gas off ,
gas on
gas off,

regards
leong

p/s of course it has the MOST colourful cars in ALL DRIVING SIMS

I agree. It's like 400 laps of follow the leader.  My first sim was GPL, I
ran out and bought N99 and it is sooooo easy. I won a race my first day. It
took me a month to win a race in GPL and it was only an 11 laper. I do like
the pitstops though, it breaks up the boredom.
Somehow I cant get exicted about a 15.632 lap at Bristol the way I can
about a 1.29.03 at Monza.

Nascar is like wrestling.
In GP people seem to root for the car, In Nascar people root for the car
with the coolest paint job.

Ferrari=Pontiac?

To me it's a little lack luster.

Try it against some of the top drivers on TEN/NROS. Its alot harder than you
think.

Its just like anything else... preference.

I happen to think soccer is the most boring sport in the history of mankind.
Id rather go shopping with my wife than watch soccer.  (NOW THATS BAD!!!)
However... its one of, if not THE most popular sport in the world. (Except here
in the US of course).

In the US NASCAR is the most popular form of autoracing.  In Europe its F1.

To the participants and fans each has aspects that they can relate to and
thoroughly enjoy.  If you do not relate to it... you arent going to enjoy it.

As far as motorsports go for me...   I pretty much will watch anything race
<G>  However... nothing catches my attention like NASCAR and the SCCA Trans-Am
series though.  Personal preference.   However if they brought back the real
Can-Am series... then that would change ;)

The point being...  NASCAR is not as easy as it appears.  The drivers in NASCAR
have skills that F1 drivers dont and vice versa.  Each has characterictics
exclusive to the other.
(Please lets not get into the argument of which series has the best drivers in
the world in it because it will only get messy and again its up to
interpretation).

For me, I have always loved stock cars.  What I love about the N2 line of
sims is this...

1.    Car setups.  I love being able to tweak a car until it fits the way I
drive.  Driving styles are as varied as opinions, and no two are the same.
I may work on a setup for hours before going to a race, and then still tweak
that setup for years.

2.    Usually I'm not the fastest car in practice.  I will set up my car so
I can drive within my ability, and save the tires for the whole fuel load.
Then when I'm in a race, I will follow the leaders, the leaders will pull
away, I will bide my time and drive consistent laps until I catch them or
pass them in the pits.  Nothing satisfies me more than working on a setup,
and having that setup work like it's supposed to all day, and going from
last to first.

3.    In N2, it matters allot WHEN you gas on and gas off.  I like the
challenge of running on the edge, lifting off the gas late as possible and
getting back on the gas as soon as possible, all the while being as smooth
and unabusive  to the car as I can, for just one more car-length closer to
the leaders.  I love being able to see the next car in front of me, for
maybe dozens of laps, creeping ever so closer, until I can get under them
and make the pass.

4.    Strategy.  There are times when I'm not catching the leaders.  Thats'
when I whip out my calculator and start figuring mileage vs tires vs laps
etc.  I gotta decide whether to go for it, or save fuel and tires and do one
less pit stop.  I have won races this way, Dover comes to mind.  400 lap
race, 100 laps to go, I was 2 laps up on the field after everyone else
pitted under green and I stayed out.  few laps later, yellow, I pit.  Still
almost 2 whole laps up, I stretch the car to go the rest of the way, I won
the race by .3 seconds.  Ohhh, goose bumps.

5.    Anyway, I seems Papy has simulated all the details that make Nascar
unique.  And it's those details that make us sim racers love this line of
software.  It's not an instant thrill, and not an easy one.  I race with
full real settings, each track is at least 101%.   So, for me, when a car I
setup works for a 3~4 hour race, I'm grinnin.  If that car wins, I party.

Just a few things that thrill me

Hey, to each his own.  All forms of racing have elements of
technique and skill that are admirable, IMO.  Although I am first
and foremost an F1 fan, NASCAR is high on my list.

The attraction?  Well, it requires an open mind, which may be
your real struggle?  For me, there is skill, the skill to feel
the car, feel the tires going, the close racing, exploring the
true limit of the car.  And, most important to me, the GREAT
drivers find ways to communicate what the car is doing to the
crew and the adjustments that stem from that input are the
difference between winning and losing for the top flight
equipment.

The gas on, gas off is the tip of the iceberg.  Saying Nascar is
only gas on, gass off is akin to saying the same for F1... which
clearly is not true.  Getting the car setup to leave the gas on
as long as possible, and get back on it as soon as possible, all
the while managing a 3500lb beast hell bent on succumbing to
centrifigal force whilst barrelling into a turn 3 wide at
175mph... that takes talent.  Different talent than F1.
Different talent than CART.  Talent nonetheless.

In my humble opinion, to ignore that fact is to be ignorant and
close minded.

To each his own.  I don't like drag racing for example, but that
doesn't mean I need to put it down.  It takes extreme talent and
courage to succeed at that sport.  Just not my cup of tea.

If yer winning all your N99 races, then bump up the AI skill
level and see how you like Earnhardt, Martin, or T. Labonte
tapping your quarterpanel out of turn 4 at C***te and beating
you into turn1 by a yard... *that's racin'*.

Cheers.

it depends on which NASCAR you are speaking of, the driving game or the
real racing series?
as far as the racimng game goes, it is unfair to compare it to GPL. i am
a NASCAR fan, but the heck if i even play NASCAR2 anymore. i'll just
wait for NASCAR3. you may, however, compare it to INDYCAR. if the game
is too easy for you, jack the computer models up to 102% and give it a
whirl. 40 cars on a small track means that you will always have somebody
around your car at all times.
as far as the actual racing series goes, tradin' paint is a lot of the
e***ment of NASCAR. muscle your way past. pit strategies are also a
top interest in the sport. but the real drawing power of NASCAR to
americans is that they at least somewhat resemble the cars that the fans
themselves drive. good vs. evil. yankees vs. dodgers. conners vs.
mcenroe. chevy vs. ford.
you say, "gas on, gas off". doing this is very unfair. each track in
NASCAR has very different dynamics that make a world of difference to
the driving style. bristol - vey high banking and faster speeds.
martinsville - very tight corners and flat. darlington - two different
length turns with high grooves. talladega - no braking involved. phoenix
- tri-oval with different lines at each corner. then take into account
the road courses that NASCAR runs. what you have is the most competitve
racing series around. the restart situation and pit stops ensure this.
what's wrong with having several cars having the opportunity to win?
strategy is much more a part of the outcome in NASCAR than in other
racing series such as f1. i'm not saying that this is good or bad but it
does at least make a case for e***ment on some level.
paint jobs? you're damn right! NASCAR cars are hilariously beautiful in
the commercialism. it is a solid fact that NASCAR fans fuly support
NASCAR sponsor products to a degree that leaves all other sporting
concerns in the dust. i like sterling marlin. you better believe that if
i have to buy a large brewing company beer it will be a coors product.
just like i will buy kodak before fuji. i also get gas at a union 76
station for the most part. this type of sponsorship is abhored in pro
sports in the US with the exception of NASCAR. we would cry ***y
*** if a team was known as the "hooked on phonics atlanta braves"
like is done in worldwide soccer.

I think I like the portability the sim has shown.  I had put N2 on a shelf
until the guys at the Pits conceived the
touring car patch for N2.  Now I spend hours each week running offline
events and not a single one is an oval.  The touring car patch takes the
Indycar2 road and street courses and combines them with the two road courses
in N2.   They also plan on including the new roadcourse in N99 and possibly
the re-configured
Sears Point track as well.

patch witch re-creates the early 70's era of Nascar.  Hopefully before long
the patch wizards will be able to morph the generic N2 body into that most
awesome of Stockcars the Dodge Daytona/Plymouth Superbird.  When the aero

Plus users all over the world have come up with tire and wheel graphics,
trackside updates, right and left drive***pits, the ability to customize
N2 is growing...
I have two dreams for the sim, one that the GPL tracks can be
converted...I think driving the Nurburgring in
my Dodge Stratus or Alfa Romeo touring cars would be much easier than the
Grand Prix cars that are modeled so well in GPL.  And 2nd, a real track
editor, not just trackside art, that would allow courses from all over the
world to be simulated...  GP2 also has much of this due to it's age as well.
The longer a  product endures, the more tweeks available for it...

Don't forget the game is already 2 years old.
I don't know how your doing that.  Am I doing something wrong?  I can't drive
into the turns at Atlanta going 200mph, let off the gas and get back on without
hitting the wall or causing my lap speed to be slower than normal.  I guess
it's just personal preference as to which racing series you like.  But then
again, it's only a game.  In real life, you wouldn't be doing gas on, gas off.

But why do they have to go round and around regular shaped ovals all day long -
what's wrong with a good old fashioned corner? Now if they only drove road
circuits we'd have touring cars and now you're talking....
