Now this is a silly argument. The masses are always right? Yepp, Jerry
Springer definitly agrees with that... ;^)

Nevertheless, I'm a big fan of Nascar, and I hate Eurosport for screwing
it up so often.

This sig is not meant as an offence or an insult. I only try to collect
some funny quotes, mainly about football, and use them as a sig.

So please ignore my sig if you don't like it and wait till I have a new
one.

In the first place: racing at a 5 km circuit, which has a variety of slow
and fast curves is for me much more exciting than just turning left four
times a lap.

In the second place. On a well-built circuit (Which, I admit, are scarce
nowadays), it is not only the car's HP that counts, but also a great deal
of driver skill. On ovals, HP is much more important

In the third place. In the American racing series (not only NASCAR, but
also in CART  and IRL), the racing is spoilt by those annoying safety-car
situations. So you only have to watch the last hlaf hour of the race to
see the decisions.

In the fourth place, those NASCAR-cars are like rolling bill-boards. The
GT1 or BTCC cars in Europe look much more tastefull.

In the fifth place, most ovals are almost the same. All tracks in the F1
championship or the FIA GT are essentially different

When I first saw a NASCAR-race on Eurosport, I judged it with an open
mind. My postings here are a result of the proces of thinking after I
asked myself why I didn't like it. So I am not talking out of the blue.

I didn't say F1 is heaven on earth.

In my opinion, F3 or F3000 or the BTCC is a lot closer to what racing
should be.

I don't like rallying or motorcycling very much, but I will never say that
those sports aren't real motorsport.

BUT NASCAR, that totally stupid: driving around in a rolling billboard,
turning left some 1600 times and when the first bloke is too far ahead,
some safety car appears an the whole game starts from the beginning!

The problem with F1 in the US is that we have so many choices as far as
racing goes.  And its all close racing.  Cart racing this year has been
incredibly close with many teams being in the hunt every race.  NASCAR has
always been close by design, so when we watch a F1 race and see only two
guys running for a win it seems boring, when compared to 62 lead changes at
Michigan's Cart race or any NASCAR race.

Good effort Paul but wrong.  While I agree that there are a great many
arrogant asses out there (your side and mine), there is a strong,
loyal, and knowlegdable F1 fan presence here in Canada.  I have been
following F1 since 1971...I follow all forms of motorsport (some more
closely than others)...I have 3 years of SCCA experience, and I devour
motorsports news on a daily basis (when I can find it).  I believe I
understand F1 better than you think...can you say the same for IndyCar
and NASCAR?

The key words there are "for me"

You've never actually tried to wrestle a simulated Nascar around an oval
for more than a handful of laps, have you?  Sure, any monkey can jump in
and turn a few hot laps, but at the expense of tires.  The subtle
differences come through when you try to last a whole race, including pit
stops that are forced on you for over driving the tires.

Agreed.  But if you only watch the last half of the race, you're missing a
lot of intense racing between those yellows.  In CART, I really don't care
who wins, as I am not an Andretti supporter, or Zanardi fan, but I love
watching the series because the actual racing is much more intense than in
F1 lately.

"tasteful" means that it is a matter of taste.  I kind of like the crazy,
toy-car quality of Nascars.  And since corporate money is what makes the
series survive, I am not going to take that away from them.

FIA mandated courses are getting more and more similar.  They are all
turning into Magny Cours go-kart tracks.  All ovals are subtly different,
and it is these subtleties that make them difficult.  I have no problem
driving the high speed ovals without meeting the wall, but getting that
last 10kph out of the car is ridiculously hard.  Short ovals in a Nascar
are still beyond me.

Well, let's see here, it's a more constantant turn, not just a quick left/right
as usual in F1.

::BUZZ:: Wrong again.  All the HP in the world won't mean jack if you can't
handle the car through the turns and keep it stable.  And all the cars run the
same HP engines.

That's not always the case.  Actually, that's never the case depending on how
you look upon it.  What if the strongest car in the race crashes or something.
You wouldn't know that from watching the last half hour.

Why should this matter?  I rather have the NASCAR look than GT1.   And you
don't call that GT-1 Mobil Porsche a rolling billboard?

They might LOOK the same, but they aren't exactly.  Just look at C***te and
Texas.  Few tracks in NASCAR look the same.  Take into consideration track
lengh, width, and banking.

Don't know about NASCAR races being close, at least not Winston Cup
during 1998.  Didn't Gordon and Martin win 2/3 of the races between
them?  Throw in Jarrett, and how many others won races.  Winston Cup has
become more like F1 - follow-the-leader, only two teams winning.
