Papyrus Sims and AMD Processor

by Indy » Fri, 24 Apr 1998 04:00:00

I am looking to upgrade my processor in the near future (currently have an
overclocked P5-166 (non-mmx)  overclocked to 200).  I have read alot about
the AMD chips not providing as much FPU power as the Intel chips.  This is
supposedly a weakness that would affect Quake gamers.  My question:  Are
Papyrus sims FPU dependent?  Will I notice better results from a AMD 233
w/mmx than my current configuration.  Thanks!

Prior to GPL, I think everything was done in integer (fixed point)
math. GPL uses floating point EXTENSIVELY...

I have a K6-166 and it works great for the Papyrus Sims.  If I had a
3dfx card, it would probably handle GPL just fine also.  One of the
techs for GPL has said that a AMD K6-166 or P5-166 with 32meg ram,
3dfx card should work well.  Off course, the higher the processor
speed, the better.  Also, they mentioned that the Cyrix's would
probably have some minor problems, and they didnt know of the new M2
Cyrix's performance.  If I find the note of where I saw them
mentioning all of this, I will pass it along to you.

But my K6 233 machine with Monster 3d card runs GPL demo smooth as silk at
800x600

I have a Cyrix - P200MMX, 32megs ram, 3dfx card.
NO problems whatsoever with GPL.
Thought you'd like to know.
