The K6 will work ok with all current sims. Some sims do use the FPU
heavily, though. While the K6 FPU isn't exactly crap, it is in fact
inferior to the one of Pentiums and PIIs working at the same clock
speed. I recently installed a K6 200 (I was given) into my machine,
and there was no discernible increase in speed over the iP166 I had
previously installed for the GPL demo. Even when I was running the
chip at 225MHz, it didn't look any better - and I was looking hard for
an improvement, believe me. :)
K6 chips are a good choice for a sim machine, but not an excellent
one. If you have to replace mainboard and CPU anyway, go for the
Celeron 300A (the "A" part is important) and a good mainboard. Check
the other "upgrade" postings in this group for advice regarding the
chipset. Keep in mind you'll need new PC100 compatible memory, too.
If your current board supports the K6 (-2) 300 (maybe after a BIOS
upgrade), it might be worth a second thought as a low-budget upgrade.
Stay away from Cyrix chips for *** purposes, though. They show
excellent results for "serious" applications, but not for games/sims.
