F1 2002 CTDs and Screen Freezes

by don hodgdo » Mon, 13 Jan 2003 08:17:39

Has anyone come up with a solution for those of us who are having screen
freezes and CTDs in F1 2002? I want to run GTR 2002 but I can't get F1 2002
to run right. I can start the sim and get through all the intro and option
screens, but when I get in the car I can barely make it to the end of pit
lane before it either freezes with looping sound, or it just crashes to the
desktop.

When I first installed F12002 it ran great for weeks, then the week before
GTR 2002 was released, I started having this problem.

I have tried changing the desktop resolution to the same used in the game,
both 16 bit and 32 bit, new VIA drivers, new sound car drivers, upgraded
from DX8b to DX9, a whole raft of Nvidia drivers from the 23.xx up to the
latest 41.09(?) drivers, two different CD drives and the no CD patch and
multiple reinstalls of F12002. Dammit, I want to drive GTR2002!

System, Athlon T-Bird 1400, not overclocked, SB Live Platinum 5.1, Abit KT7
MB, 512 Ram, GF2 GTS 64mb.

I think I'll just go outside and work on my new Volvo...

TIA,

Did you install any new hardware or software during that week?  Change some
system settings?  If it worked once it is not likely to be a hardware issue.
What OS?

Work on a NEW Volvo?  I thought cuz they were new you wouldn't need to
work on them.
Anyhow.  Lets fix this puppy for you.  first UNinstall F1 2k2.  Get rid
of alll the mods and any addons you may have had.  (don't delete the
dloadable zip files...just the installed mods)
Start completely fresh and try to get F1 2k2 working right before even
atempting to add a mod.
With a Gf2, I would first try either the 21.83 drivers or the 30.82's.
Don't even worry about the 40's  with your GF2.
Re-install the No_cd patch and verify that that is working correctly.
Usually this means you no longer use F1 2002.exe to start the sim but rather
F1_2002.exe.
Put your pit crew to minimal, your quickrace starting posisiton to RANDOM
and don't use any FSAA when you run 3d config.  Also with your system I
would avoid 32bit color.
What soundcard do you have?  Have you checked the IRQ's to see if there
are any conflicts or shared IRQ's?  Especially the Video and Sound cards
should NOT be sharing IRQ #'s.
Change the card's locations(different PCI slots) or attempt to change the
IRQ's with Device Manager.
What OS are you using?  What kind of Controller?(Wheel?  Joystick?
keyboard??)
Hopefully with enough shotgun shell type questions, we'll find out what
wrong.

I knew I'd forget something ;-) Win98se

No new hardware since building the machine and no software since installing
F12002...that's what's got me stumped. The damn thing just quit running. I
thought it might be a heat issue, but the motherboard monitor shows that the
CPU is running within it's normal temp and all the fans are up to speed.

Well....it's not a new Volvo, just new to me ;-) It's a sweet little 242
Turbo, a 1981 (first year of the turbo) with only 119,000mi on it. It was
owned by a school teacher from Pasadena (yes, a Little Old Lady from
Pasadena!), CA. I've had my eye on the car for about 10 years and when the
owner passed away I was able to purchase it from the estate. I have a new
wiring harness and water-cooled turbo on the way along with new vented
rotors and calipers. I plan to take it off the road for at least the next
year and restore it to original. Fortunately, I have a kick-ass 740 turbo as
my daily driver, so I can afford to let the 240 sit for a while.

Did that...5 times. The only mod I had installed in the beginning was Laguna
Seca.

I've tried 23.11, 28.32, 30.82, 40.72 and 41.09 drivers. I'll give the
21.83s a try.

I don't use FSAA, Starting position is set to Random and Pit Crew set to
minimal

I never had a bit of trouble using 32bit, but have switched to 16bit while
trying to get F1 2002 running.

SB Live Platinum 5.1 - No shared IRQs. I have not changed slots for the SB
Live yet, all my other sims run so well, I hate to***them up.

Win98se, Momo Force

Thanks for the help Dave. I've been reading your posts and trying the many
suggestions you have given others. I'll give the 21.83 drivers a shot.

Dave, you are the man! The 21.83 drivers did the trick. I just ran two full
laps at Montreal without so much as a screen flicker.

Now to install the GTR mod...

Thank you for the help!
