F1-2002 display freezes when HUD switched off

I have encountered a problem in F1 2002 that I wonder if anyone knows how to
get around?

Being used to the***pit mode of F1 2001 with the wheel being my only
display, I was quite disappointed when the HUD did not automatically turn
off in***pit mode in F1 2002.  When I turned off the HUD in the display
options then head out onto the track, the display freezes up as soon as i
apply some gas.  Everything else still works and the car is moving.  If I
check the instant replay, i can see my car driving blindly around pitlane.
I really want to get rid of the HUD as it detracts from the sim experience.

Any suggestions, or comments if you've run into a similar problem?

System Specs:

Windows XP Pro
AMD Athlon 1200
ATi AIW 8500DV
256MB SDRAM
MS FFB Wheel
