setup?

Probably not 1:04.00, but maybe a high 1:04 ;-)

The cars in gpl have loads of power compared to the amount of grip, and this
means that the setup you use is much less critical than with modern, high
grip and/or downforce cars.

As long as the setup suits your style of driving and is easy to control on
the limit, in theory any sensible setup is capable of getting good times.
Where the theory collapses is the amount of mistakes (small as well as
large) the driver makes ;-)

I set my own cars up to suit me, and can lap fairly quickly & consistently.
If a driver who could lap just as quickly & consistently with their own
setup were to try mine, they would probably be slower, even with practice,
and vice versa. The car doesn't suit their style so well, so they find it
harder to control & easier to make mistakes.

So if the default setups suit your style, and you are a fast driver, there
shouldn't be any reason why you couldn't run 104's.

One final point is that the default setups include a full tank of fuel. The
best drivers in the world couldn't do a 104 with full tanks, but the same
setup at the end of a full GP might.

Interesting you should ask this question today...

I think a 1:04 with the defaults would be very difficult (unless you're
an alien),

..but as an experiment I went back to Zandvoort this afternoon to see
how far I'd get with the default setups there.   And to see how far
we've come in five years setups-wise.

In the end, I didn't get near my pb of 1:25 with the defaults, but did
get a 1:26.80, enough to go negative.

So yes, I guess Eldred is largely right in saying 'it's not the arrow,
it's the Indian'.  ;)

On average I'm still a second or so faster with better setups though.
