GPL Default Setups Advice - how good?

by Michael Powel » Wed, 14 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I just purchased GPL at the weekend having been in anticipation for 2 or
more years - and its really living up to expectations.

However, I'm not really into tweaking setups, especially in the early stages
of playing the sim.

What do people think of the default setups - are they good enough to advance
through up to Pro Level, if not, how high could you go?

Given that in real-world GP racing, you can't really get good testing
feedback on a car until the driver is lapping ultra-consistently - say
within 0.1-0.3 secs over a 20 lap test, how do people assess the result of a
tweak? Or are people really lapping that consistently?

For example, when you're trying to improve corner exit traction by fiddling
with the diff, how do you know changes are not just you being heavy or light
on the throttle?

Congrats!:)

Nope. They are not too bad, but way too pushy.

They are. When you start feeling the tires coming in,  the next 2-3 laps
you can assess your mods.In time, you learn to recognize your cars
language..

The diff settings affect your cars behaviour in other ways as well,
adding cluches/ changing ratio will give you otherindications too. It
gets twitchy under accel, horrible on cold tires, and your driving style
has to be more comitted in the turns (hi-speed), as more diff creates
off-throttle understeer. I am used to running Monza with 6 clutches,
takes 2-3 laps to "settle" with my setup. Of course, the leader had then
got a comfy 6-sec lead when I ran online the 1st time....
Isn't that just great? I'll have to twitch my brain a bit more, and
practice more..can't afford those "slow" opening laps:))
In general, I'd say stay with one clutch until you have reached a peak
on your laptimes, and then start modifying.

See you online....

Cheers,

Matthew K.

I think I will - with new tracks and new cars to learn, there are just way
too many variables at the moment.
