GPL lap times - setup

by Slowhan » Wed, 21 Oct 1998 04:00:00

hello gpl-***s,

there are some lap times posted already ... but ....
did they do that with default setup? with a full tank?

when driving in Monza with Papy's setups, i can go
1:31:xx with the lotus
1:34:xx with the ferrari
1:32:xx with the eagle
that's between lap 4 and 8 with another ~60 laps of fuel left
.... seems to me, that i've reached my limits :(

so: is it time now to change the setups? or can (should) i still try
to become better at the track because you guys can go 3 seconds faster
with the SAME car??

another question :) ...
how is the number of remaining laps with the fuel calculated?
imo the way you handle your car doesn't matter (but i've never made
a grand prix race to the end to be sure) - but if GPL is realistic,
there should be a diff between driving smooth and driving with my foot
down to the floor.

thanks for every answer :)

well for sure there are several seconds to be had by using a qualifying
setup. and for sure some people who are very fast in qualifying may not be
able to modify their driving styles and last a full gp. then again they
may...those are good times btw.

I've run out of fuel two or three times despite filling the car with
supposedly enough fuel for the entire race. In each case I had been
overreving and overdriving trying to catch or stay ahead of someone. I
no longer cut the fuel quite as fine as I used to, giving myself a
certain percentage margin.

Cheers!

Supporting that, you'll also lose fuel pressure (and speed!) for a
lap or two (on Monza, for instance*) before you run dry.  Don't push
your luck.

* - and if you run out of fuel at the 'Ring, bring a picnic basket  :)

I don't know but ...

In gp2 fuel consumption is based on engine revs. Eg. When gp2 say 10
laps of fuel, it means 10 laps driven in a more or less typical normal
way. If you long shift you'll use more fuel than if you short shift.
I'd guess that gpl is at least as realalistic and therefore "10 laps"
worth of fuel does not mean 10 laps are possiable in high revs in 1st
gear, but 10 laps based on "nornal" gearbox usage. Just my guess.

If you try shorter shifting do you noticfe any difference ? Shorter
shifting should make your engine last longer anyway. After some time
we should get to know how the way we use fuel relates to the way gpl
assumes fuel usage.

Cheers
