GPL, full grid & 36 FPS ?

by Sid Chappl » Sat, 21 Dec 2002 15:48:34

What sort of system specs does it take to get 36fps at the back of a full
grid at Monaco, 16 bit track textures, with Mirrors = Full, Trackside
Objects = All, Features all on, Resolution 1024x768, D3D mode, and Detail
Bias turned up to 100% ? I have a amd system with a xp1600, 384 mb ram, SB
Live, and a GF4 128mb Ti 4200 on win98 but only get 30fps with the detail
bias at 100%. If i turn it down to 74% i get 36fps but put it at 75% and it
goes back down to 30fps.
Curious if anyone can get 36fps with similar settings at 100% detail bias?
Sid.

try the opengl fix over at racesimcentral's forums.  The Nvidia cards
generally perform better in opengl than d3d.  And what drivers are you
using?  the 41.09 are supposed to be pretty fast.

I've tried opengl and i've tried different drivers, same outcome though, 74%
detail bias and 36fps, anything over 74% and fps drops to 30. I am using the
drivers that came with card atm 31.00 i think, a Leadtek Winfast A280LE TD
128mb Ti4200 AGP8X, although i am only using AGP4X as my motherboard does
not support 8X.

As suggested, try the new Detonator drivers from www.nvidia.com, they
should offer better performance on the GF4.

Still you probably won't get 36fps with 100% detail bias. It might
take a couple of years of hardware development before that can be
achieved... if at all. But do you really notice a difference between
74% and 100% while racing?

BTW, I'd also recommend the new OpenGL patch by WiHerr. Even if there
isn't a noticeable increase in fps, it's definitely smoother than D3D,
atleast on GeForce cards.

The 41.09s were noticeably slower than the 40.72s on my XP1800 GF3 card. The
40.72s were a good jump over the 30 series drivers. It wasn't the 25% that
Nvidia claimed, but was around 15%.

The updated OpenGL patch does run smoother, but I had to adjust the LOD
settings to make up for some of the sharpness that was lost with OpenGL over
D3D.

I had a similar problem, mainly because my system isn't as fast.  (AMD
Athalon 1G, 384 megs mem Nvidia GForce 4 4400). I found that while the Open
GL patch does give better frame rates, it tends to distort the colours of
some of the edited tracks.  For example the grass at Bremgarten and Oulton
Park MC

does this patch do any more "magic" than fixing some crash
problems? I installed the 1998 opengl dll from the papy site
and it works fine on my system. Is there anything to be gained
from using the "new" patch?

Cheers / TIA,

uwe

I get 36fps at the back of a full Monza grid with all the latest addons at
1600x1280 + 16x Aniso and 100% detail bias.
