F1 2001 PS2 Setups - Sensitivity Solved

by John P. Wilso » Sun, 07 Oct 2001 12:12:11

All:
Well! After two days of test-driving and number-crunching, I seem to have
"figured out" the setup system of F1 2001. Boy, do I know more now than I
ever did about car setup...! Guys and gals, this *really* is the GPL of the
PlayStation2.  I mean it - GT3 doesn't hold a *candle* to the simulation
driving model in this game.

If you recall, in my previous review post (on f1gamers.com), I commented
that if downforce is set up for understeer, there is a screeching sound
along straights, hindering top speed. I am stupid. I WAS BOTTOMING OUT. It
took two days for me to realize that (by trial and error)! Doofus!

After *properly* setting up my Ferrari F2001, I seem to have solved the
following quirks of EA's masterpiece:

1. Overly-sensitive driving controls.
2. Oversteer on all parts of all tracks.
3. Unrealistic high-speed cornering ability.

Here are my findings. Soon (perhaps), I will create a section of my website
(home.austin.rr.com/jpwilson) that will host this information permanently
for all to see and contribute to.

Note: these are extreme values. I encourage you to use these as a base, and
tweak to suit your driving style. This setup works well at medium-speed
curcuits like Silverstone (my testbed).

Tires:
Compound is Hard
Front Pressure is 23.5 psi
Rear Pressure is 25.5 psi

Aerodynamics:
Front Wing is 1
Rear Wing is 20

Suspension:
Front Ride Height is 50mm
Front High Bump Stop is 50mm
Front Low Bump Stop is 50mm
Front Springs are 120n/mm
Front Sway Bars are 300n/mm
Rear Ride Height is 75mm
Rear High Bump Stop is 75mm
Rear Low Bump Stop is 75mm
Rear Springs are 135n/mm
Rear Sway Bars are 120n/mm

Brakes:
Brake Balance is 20 (1=front, 100=rear)
Brake Strength is 30

Go forth and multiply! Comments welcome! E-mail me!

I don't suppose it's solved the fact that you have to use the stick
shifter on the Ferrari wheel, or the fact you can't save those settings
and have to plug them in before you race every time?

Cheers,
Rod.

LOL.  Hmm, as I am using the Sony analog pad, I have to set up my car to
steer with little nubs of *** (hey, watch it...).

After playing F1 for the PS2 for a couple of days now, I am thoroughly
convinced that this is the best F1 racer ever made for console, and is
possibly the best on any system ever.  Very fun game, very fun and ***ive
gameplay.  Overall, just an awesome game that everyone should experience
once.

F1 2001 PS2 Setups - Sensitivity Solved

RREVVED!!!  Long time, no see!  (Actually, it's been me - what, 2 years
without sim driving?)  It supports the left stick as the steering and the
right stick as the throttle/brake, all of which have decent sensitivity and
throw.  Yes, it will save your controls and options settings, but NOT
setups.  You must set them yourself, everytime.  The only time it keeps it
for you is *inside* of a race weekend (i.e. session to session).

On the contrary, I'm having as much fun with this (graphics combined with
sound and modern cars) as I ever did with GPL.  It takes some learning, and
some setup (which requires more learning, lol), but it is loads of fun.
And, it's the only racing game I've seen outside of maybe F1'97 (their
producer's previous title - it's the same crew) that rewards *skill* and
*precision,* rather than repetition and dumb luck.

Please don't ask me that, I've just eaten!  :-)  Not *that* bad.  It reminds
me of GP2's replays, only without the view changes (i.e. always from the TV
view).  Excellent effects and realism in the replays, though.  The speeds
are reflective of real life.

Absolutely not.  It is the best looking racing title of all time, perhaps
tieing (sp?) GT3.  But it is much more reflective, reactive (real-time
reflections, shadows, marshalls, flags, crowds), and *alive* than any racing
sim I've seen.  I get the distinct impression I'm really at these tracks.

I'm using the broke-23-year-old setup.  19" Sanyo TV, A/V from PS2 to R/F
converter, co-ax from R/F to TV.  Through all that, it *still* looks
amazing.  I'd love to have a bigger TV though (had a dream about one last
night...48'...).

Anytime.  I really think this is *it* on the PS2 for driving realism.  GT3's
physics pale in comparison.  I can't think of hardly *any* things (i.e.
physics model qualities) that are there in GPL and are not in F1.  One other
thing: visit www.f1gamers.com, and look for comments by F1Pete - he's the
producer - or ask him a question.  He's very friendly and knowledgeable
about his games (F1'97 and F1 2001), and filled us in on a lot of things
before the release.

One more thing.  GameSpot UK's posted their review.  Like any game-reviewer,
they care mostly about the visuals, but they do touch on every aspect of the
game.

Yes, it supports right analog braking and accelerating.

Yes.

Not sure.

Average.

Graphics are pretty good, not *quite* as good as GT3 but pretty damn good
nonetheless.  If GT3 would never have been released, we would all be
drooling over these graphics.  =)

How are you proposing to stop understeer by using "1" on the front wing and
hard tires? I tried your setup and
I think it needs some work!

Thanks for trying!
