OT: New mobo and CPU for simming- best bang for the buck

by J » Sat, 18 Oct 2003 14:23:11

Hi everybody,
Finally I'm going for a new rig and would appreciate some advise.

I'm looking for a mainstream solution,  no budget or high end.
Might be a P4 2.4 (up to 800) or a AMD 2600 for instance.

Also, VIA chipsets are out of of the question after 2 NBT (nothing but trouble)
years with my KT266 A.

I already got an ATI 9600 pro.

Few things I'm not certain about:
How are the P4s compared to the AMDs? 3D Mark says lousy, but that's sponsored
by AMD

If intel chipset, 845 or 865?

Is hyperthreading something not to miss out?

What is the boost from P4 400 over 533 to 800?

The new AMD 64 (Are that those Bartons?) is something to wait for (until
afforadable)?

A lot of questions, any help (also partially) is highly appreciated.

TIA

Jens

BTW: I was on a XP 1600+ until now

I'd get a P4 2.8 with hyperthreading (800fsb) and a mobo with either an I865
or I875 chipset.
Check Newegg.com.  You can get this for about $400.  With an Abit, Asus or
another decent mobo, you should be able to run that P4 2.8 at about 3.2 or
so.

IMHO?

ABIT IC7-MAX3 and the best P4 you can afford.  Match that board with the
P4-2.4C and some good Corsair RAM and if you are into overclocking you WILL
be in heaven.

ASUS P4P800, one PC has a 2.4 running at 3.1, the other one has a 2.8
running at 3.5, no fancy cooling or anything like that, no 7200 rpm
Delta fans or anything :-)

That's great.  That good old P4 2.4 was quite an overclocker!

Sorry, should have been more specific, it's the "C" models of course,
while the 2.4 B was also a good overclocker, I ran mine at 2.8 before I
swapped it for this 2.4C, it really can't compare to these new ones

The problem is finding memory that is fast enough to keep the FSB and
memory at the same speed, and that's not easy with the 2.4 running at
1060 FSB, which would mean a memory speed of 530, the 2.8 runs at 1000
and you can find memory that will run at 500 even if it's expensive :-)

Thanks Gents for the good advice.
Unluckily Abit is quite uncommon here, but I got the message:
Quality board, probably Asus, with alotta bells and whistles to play around.

Thx again
