Best bang-for-buck-CPU??

by Speedy Fas » Wed, 14 Jun 2000 04:00:00

If I want to go upwards of 750 MHz with an overclocked CPU, what is
the best bang for the buck??  I am thinking of going Athlon for my
next PC but I am not sure of overclocking needs.  A reliable
overclocking is desireable.

My *** needs will be GP3 and GPL.  My current system runs GPL good
in 800x600.  This system is a Celeron 466 with a Voodoo 3-2000.  But
my concern is GP3.

[I am familiar with overclocking.]

Really cant go wrong with a celery 566 oc'd to 850.  You can pick up one of
these cpu's for $100.  Another positive is you can generally still use your
current BX based mobo.  You may need a slotket adapter for this that can be
had for around $25.

AOpen AX6B BX motherboard without shutting it off since I got it a few weeks
ago.   No heat problems at all, no instability.  Runs circles around the
PII/450 it replaced.  I got it here after seeing this URL in this NG:

http://www.genxtechcomp.com/

I got the chip, an Abit Slotket and a "Golden Orb" cooler pre-attached to
the chip for about 200$

I guess I third this since daxe already seconded it ;-)
I just ordered the Abit Slotket and Golden Orb from 1st Look. $35 including
shipping,  and a 566 guaranteed at 920mhz.for $140 on ebay.  The next move
up will mean replacing my be6 r2 and pc100 ram, so I thought I'd better do
this now. I've been running a 366 at 600mhz at 1.95v. for about 4 or 5
months. Guess it's time to sell it. I'm trying to not buy a new video card
yet. I'd like to wait until the next round comes out. A couple of my buddies
have bets on whether or not I can wait. Every time I see a V5500 that's a
good deal (like $275) I put my hand over my wallet and hold it in my pocket.
Please, reassure me that the next round of sims are going to be more cpu
dependant than video dependant ;-)

Depends on budget  i guess - theres always the chance you'll get a 566 that
wont run at 100 bus - the 533A might be a safer bet- or if you can afford
it - a 500 or 550 PIII 100 bus that you can run at 133 bus. Personaly I just
got a PIII 667 cause it was similar price to a 550 anyway - it s default is
133 bus so Idont overclock it, and in games like Quake 111 - benchmarks show
it performs better than PIII 800 100 bus - probably not for GPL though - as
for GP3 - cant tell until its out.

Dammit, everyone else get their Cel566 screaming. Although I only have
the boxed fan on it (going to order a globalwin today) I couldn't even
get it to run on 638 Mhz without lockup yesterday. Windows wont even
boot at 850, with 1.8 v core.

Moral: get a garanteed oc'able processor.
