Any problems with Zone Alarm and racing online??

by abe » Tue, 07 May 2002 11:48:47

Thinking about installing Zone Alarm, but concerned it might cause me some
problems when I try to log on to online racing.  At the download site for
zone alarm, most comments are positive, but a few said they had problems
with email and surfing the net after installing the program.  Anyone here
had any problems of this nature?

Thanks

I know ZA screws GPL up pretty good; it's not a big deal, you just disable
ZA to run GPL.

Abe,

The comment I've heard the most often is not being able to host online
races.  But like Milhouse sez, you just disable it for the nonce (which is
what I have to do with SyGate).  You might also try Tiny Software (free) and
PC-Cillin ($).

It produced aweful warp for me and so did all the others to varying degrees,
the only one I found that I can leave on is Norton and I quite often get
attacked while racing so I'd never switch it off.

Not really, it's been quite a while since I switched. They both have free
versions ( I use the free version of Sygate) so you can try them on your
system and see which you prefer.

I am using the latest free version and I have to shut it off to run GPL
online. If I don't, GPL hangs.

I also play an online game called Dark Age of Camelot, and it has random
freezes if I leave ZA running.

It's not really***, but the little window ZA tries to put up for
internet Access aproval doesn't make it with GPL.  The PRO version of ZA
fixes this, in that you can assign programs in advance so they don't have to
wait for the game to be launched to get internet approval.
My son has DAC as well, we've been using Tiny Firewall, now called Kerio
Personal Firewall with no problems that I'm aware of....

I've tried GPL in a window, still hangs. I've made sure GPL.EXE (and
VROC.EXE) have full permissions in ZA. Nothing helped. So I gave up on it; I
don't really care if it's running either.

I haven't used ZA in a while, heh.  I think it did get patched out, but the
program disappointed me for other reasons too.  I've got a hardware firewall
anyway.
