N4 serving behind Zone Alarm Pro?

N4 serving behind Zone Alarm Pro?

by sting3 » Sun, 09 Sep 2001 01:20:19

Hi all,  and sorry if I this post seems long?

I did a google search 1st, so if I missed the post that answers my
question I'm sorry.

I am trying to set up the newest version of ZA-pro to allow N4 server to
run, but unless I shut ZAp down nobody can connect (even me on the LAN).

Here are the things I have tried,
1st configured ZAp to allow nascar4 (server one only on this machine) to
allow any access in the program properties of ZA,  had the popup remember
settings, went in set it to allow server, set restrictions to minimum and
applied.
No dice.  Server goes to WON and is listed, others can also see it, but
still no one can connect.

2nd decided maybe it was still possibly better to just specify the ports
nascar server needed so I added range of UDP ports like the server.txt
specifies, set it to allow ONLY these ports with full access.  No dice,
usually wont connect to WON either.

I can only guess that if others are successful, then maybe these settings
really are not being applied, but that remains to be seen if anyone is able
to make it work?

So I shut off ZAp, and everything works great, I can host 10-15 pretty well,
not bad I guess?  That was the most that ever joined anyway was 10 I think.

after 8 hours of serving on a Sunday (for league practice) I turned on Zone
alarm, and in less than 5 minutes (even less than that, prolly 2) I had
filled the warnings/alerts (the passive window you can look at) with 500
ALERTS!  That is max that ZAp will log in one session I guess, cause it said
500 of 500 (max) alerts...
so you see, I really want to run some firewall and be able to server some
races.  Also of note, not sure I didn't get broken into, because the machine

because it is the Wife's machine...  <G>

anyone serving from behind ZA?  can you help me figure out what I missed?  I
can race from behind it no problems, just cant seem to allow connections
from behind it.

Thanks for help.

I found a thread about serving GPL and ZAp, but the thread only had like one
pertinent reply from one person, saying he was serving from behind Black Ice
I think.  or maybe Tiny Persona Firewall.

I also read that ZAP adds too much latency to it, maybe that is all that the
problem is, and ZAp just cant serve GPL or N4?

I host behind the free version of ZA. The lock has to be unlocked and the
internet security has to be set to minimum, regardless of the program's
settings (allow server, pass lock, etc).

N4 serving behind Zone Alarm Pro?

simracer,
Thanks, for the input.  I want to know something... is that all you had
to do?  because I know that was my initial steps were to set ZAp to allow
passlock and allow server, plus like I said I moved the slider for les
security (for nascar4.exe) for local and internet, and I know I never put
that in my post, my bad.

I also know that the free version of ZA only blocks 1 out of a supposed 26
other "things" that pro is "protecting me from" thus the supposed reason to
buy PRO, and maybe Nascar's udp & ping ports & and connections from the
individual n4's are still being blocked by itself za?  I still cant tell if
it is just me, or PRO.
anyone else using ZA pro?

thanks

I tried ZAP on my dedicated N4 server, but finally gave up and went back to
Black Ice Defender.  I could only get ZAP to allow communications (N4,
PCAnywhere, etc) if I set ZAP to 'minimum'.  Well... with it at minimum you
aren't well protected, as you can easily test at sites like "shields up".

Using Black Ice, I set it to "cautious".  N4, PCAnywhere and other 'net
programs operate just fine, and when I send the server to the "shields up"
web site it is reported to be stealth. <g>  My server has been on-line since
April with no problems using Black Ice.

Yes, I am running a server behind the ZAPro firewall. You have to allow or open
the ports that guys connect to. I opened :32766-32830 which allows guys to
connect to those prots for N4. That gives you about 64 drivers or so(math). I'm
not sure of the tab to click on but I think it "Security", "Advanced", Custom
Internet Settings".

I hope that helps....
