F12002 Downshifting

Hi all

OK, so surely in an F1 car the gearchange system will match the revs to the
lower gear, as opposed to the 'rear wheel spinout' method employed in
F12002? Downshifting should not be so fraught with danger? Of course the
opposite happens in LFS, where you will accelerate if you downshift from
standstill from top gear to bottom - thats not rev matching, it obviously
just blips the throttle.

Any tips?

P.S. There are still some elements of GP4 that I prefer although they are
almost all graphics (image) related. (Not the horribly ineffecient rendering
engine though!)

It's a well known fact that you have to change down quite late into the
braking zone in an F1 car (CARTs too for that matter)  I know it's a bit
tricky at first when you're used to GPL and having to change down relatively
slowly but remember in an F1 car you can change down about 5 gears in a
second or so.

These cars have a lot of horsepower and a very high compression. If you
change down too soon, you are asking the engine to reduce revs harshly, and
the huigh compression will act as a brake. In harsh braking the weight
transfers to the front via centrifigal force leaving the weight holding the
rear wheels on the track to be very low, hence wheel lockup.

A real F1 car will try to match the revs, but can't do it always.

Example of it going wrong is Mika Hakinen during the 1999(?) Italian Grand
Prix at the first chicane.

Except that was a manual downshift as I recall, and HE made the mistake
of going all the way down to 1st gear.  If he had not lost track of his
downchanges and stopped at 2nd, there would have been no spin and he most
likely would have gone on to win the race.
