saitek R80 wheel and Win XP help please

by gadge » Wed, 16 Oct 2002 00:26:48

g'day all
i picked up a cheapish wheel for me and my young bloke to play around with.
but it seems to have some problems with windows XP and i was wondering
whether anybody had found a fix or not ?
the wheel is a Saitek R80 wheel it is a gameport jobby and has no peddles
( takes less room and my youg bloke is too short to reach peddles ne way)
so is this wheel ok for windows XP at all or should i dual boot with 98 ???
thanks for any help

If it is a Game port (Serial Connection) you should be able to just set it
up in your game controllers like you would in win9X. But you never really
explained what exactly the problem is with the wheel? Kind'a hard to
discover a fix without first knowing the problem. :o)

ok sorry
the wheel does not come with any drivers and you have to manually set it up
in control panel. after following all the instructions it does work but it
does not stay steady in the centre (when you start a game the front wheels
just keep turning side to side very quickly)
once you get moving the car then wants to pull over to the left everytime ?
i would think there is a fairly simple answer but i have not found it yet
:-)
thanks

Well from my past experiences with Serial Game Devices it sounds most like
one of two things (if not both):

1. your Gameport isnt fast enough or if you have onboard sound/gameport it
may be that the SC is using too much of the system resources and is taking
away from the gameport. etc. The solution to this would be to get a newer
soundcard with a gameport. Or get a newer/better wheel setup.

2. the Pots (or what ever that wheel's equivalent is) are cheap and not of
accurate reliability. The solution to this would be to purchase a
newer/better wheel. as it may be next to impossible to replace the Pots in
that wheel with better pots... and you would probably have more into that
wheel than it is worth.

I am sure that others on here may have other ideas as well.

when i did do some research on the saitek web site it mentioned somewhere
that the controller works fine in 98 me and 2000 but because of changes made
in win XP it said not to use the wheel as there are problems :(

i was hoping some of the smart people here would have a workaround.
or maybe they were smart enough to buy a better wheel in the first place :)

I looked around, and saitek doesnt recommend their products for xp...
it kills me too because I upgraded to xp and I cant get the thing to
go straight and it jumps real bad.
not sure what to do either.
