How do assign the joystick, wheel in Win XP?

by Sandma » Tue, 30 Oct 2001 00:29:04

Can someone help me on this.
In XP how can make assign the joystick you want use?
I have a wheel, a gamepad and joystick. In Win ME you can choose
which device you wanted to be ID1, 2,3 etc. ID 1 being the primary device.
In XP it's gone.(or at least I can't find) So, now in GP3 it only sees the
gamepad.
I have to manually disconnect the other two to get the wheel to work?

Thanks

I posted about this here yesterday.  The short answer is, you can't do it.
Apparently you only have control over which controller is the primary one if
all the controllers are USB.  If there is a gameport controller present that
is always ID #1.  It still amazes me that Microsoft removed such a useful
feature from XP.

Tomorrow I will take delivery of a gameport to USB converter that hopefully
will allow me to use mt Force RS wheel as controller 1 and my gameport BRD
pedals as controller 2.

Cheers

You won't like this, but the best option is to just get a $10.00 USB
extension cable so you don't have to reach around the back of the
computer every time you change devices. I've been doing it this way
even on Win98 and with USB devices it's hot swappable so it takes all
of 10 seconds to change to whatever controller I want to use.

I think the ability to only assign legacy gameport devices as the primary
device and also the inability to reorder your devices is a ploy by Microsoft
to try to get people to upgrade to fully plug-n-play devices like USB
controllers... I doubt whether you'd see the Win9x Controller ID
assignment....

How do assign the joystick, wheel in Win XP?

THIS IS INCORRECT!
All I have is USB controllers and I can't select which one goes on what ID.
My gravis gamepad always takes over the first ID and if I plug in my wingman
joystick, it takes over the next ID, putting my wheel as the last in the
list.
