MB World Racing (PC) - Some thoughts...

by Thomas C Norwo » Sat, 04 Oct 2003 06:09:32

After spending a couple weeks with MBWR I can say I love this game!

The tracks and locals are quite varied.  The graphics are phenomenal and
(take note NFS:HP2 designers), the in-car view is well done.

My wheel (an original TM/Guillemot Ferrari wheel) works perfectly.

The off-road races (normal and waypoints) with the M and G classes are a
hoot!  Just gotta make sure you have enough speed to make it up the hills
(and don't bump into anyone).

Some minor gripes:

Each time I start the game I have to re-select the wheel as the control
device.  It does keep all my button, etc settings though.

No headlights.  Some areas of the tracks are very dark and it would be cool
to switch the headlights on and off.  The only game I remember this being
done in is Mobil 1:BRC.  NFS4 had it but the headlights were pitiful; very
short range.

Related: No gamma correction option under Display options.

Using the keyboard to navigate the menus isn't too bad, but in this day and
age mouse support is pretty much expected.

If anyone can correct/elaborate on any of these, please feel free to do so.

All-in-all a great game.  BTW, the S-Class is a tank to drive! :)

Not having any network multiplayer is my main gripe - completely
unforgivable in this day and age.  The menus are nowhere near user-friendly
enough and the structure of the career mode is bizarre to say the least.  It
runs very poorly on my GF4 Ti4600 but runs amazingly quick on my friend's
Radeon 9700 Pro.  No other game has highlighted the differences between the
two cards as much as this game.  You're right though - on the whole, it's an
extremely fun and graphically impressive game.

Apparently this will be added ?  Also there are more cars of other makes
in store, american muscle cars & etc.

I have an MSI GF4 Ti4600 and am running it at 1024x768x32 with detail,
view dist, etc on full.  I know the 1024x768 isn't amazing for this card
but graphically it's very impressive.

What OS/RAM/Processor do you have?

I agree with the Championship structure.  I'm starting my third
Championship and am still figuring out how it all works.

I have an Athlon XP 3000+ and so does my friend.  I thought the game ran
great on my Ti4600 in 1024x768 then I saw it on the 9700 Pro - wow.  In fact
in 1600x1200 on the 9700 Pro it was marginally quicker than 1024x768 on
mine. : (

You select which championship you want to drive, and when you select
racing schedule you see which races are on the list for this
championship.
You can change the order of this racelist. When you 'delete' a race,
it will not be deleted but it will be moved to the end of the list, so
you will drive this race as the last race.

Besides that you get 'mission' races in between, if I remember
correctly you can delete these mission races from the list without
penalty, they also don't count for the overall championship stats.
Mission races are huge fun thought and you earn extra cars and tracks
with them.

At the end of the championship you can choose which one you want to
drive next. Afaik you can't abort a championship and select another
one.

In danger of seeming stupid right here in public, where can I find the demo for
this?

As i always advice my 'stupid' customers...

Just type what you want into either Google or Yahoo search engines.

You want to find the demo so type in "MB World Racing demo" into the search.

It really isnt very difficult.

Then in the future if ANYTHING puzzles you do exactly the same thing.

For example...Windows crashes with an error like " Invalid fault disk
error-please reboot" and you dont know why.....then type that exact text
into a search....you will find many people have had the same problem before
and you get to know the reasons why.Plus it makes you more knowledgable
which cant be bad.

I've been playing it also for a couple of weeks and I love this game,
I'd classify it on the same level as NFS:PU in terms of physics and
pure fun. As you said graphics are fantastic, the -huge- driving areas
are never seen in another racing game.

Bad points are the menu's, I figured them out after a while but they
are still very inconvenient. Also I would like to have more graphic
options, the ability to turn things on or off or to select detail
levels. And I also have to reselect my wheel each time I start the
game.

One of the best moments in the game is mission #7 (I believe), that
Golden Oldies race. A huge stage in the Alps, reminding me of the long
courses in Mobil 1.

The AI are very fun to race against, I set it to dynamic level so that
you have an exciting race from start to finish. Artifical, but it
works :)

The best thing of MBWR is the huge amount of sliding you can do with
these cars. It simply feels right and is huge fun.

I'm surprised MBWR gets such average reviews on a couple of ***
websites.. but then again, game reviewers allways seem to have a
different opinion than me ;)

It must be European revenge for the US having a World Series and not
inviting anyone from outside the States :-)
