Say we took an F1 car and mounted a camera and microphones where the head of the
driver should be, servos on steering wheel and pedals and gear shifter, and
sensors for g-forces. Now we set up a monitor, headset, steering wheel and
pedals and gear shifter inside a house somewhere near and connect it via radio
control to the F1 car. The g-forces get translated as tire squel, so when the
g-force sensors feel you're sliping you hear tire squel...

Now what to make of this, you might ask :o). Well, frankly I dont know. I guess
I'm just very tired and should go to sleep...

How about this one, which way do you think is the easiest way to drive the F1
car, the above remote control of the F1 or actually sitting in it? Frankly I
dont know which and would like you all to tell me :o).

Say you have to pay for it if you wreck it and it's a Formula Ford for 5000 USD.

Well, I have some test footage of a Boeing 707 being intentionally crashed
into the desert floor to check out a fire suppression system.

They (the FAA & Boeing) had a rig similar to the one you've described. The
pilot, flying the plane via remote control, ended up missing the target area
by a good 150 YARDS. Bear in mind, this is a professional test pilot we're
talking about.

You can't fly or drive something by remote control as well as you can if you
are sitting in it. You can fly or drive it BRAVER, but not as WELL.

I once put a video camera on an electric toy  RC car with a long cord to a
TV and drove around the room by watching the TV. Not easy to drive with
limited view but fun.

I was at a (deservedly) nameless local trade show
recently and they had a booth there where you did exactly
that, sitting in small replica open wheel racing car***pits
while the cars drove on a track set up on a large area of the floor.

Interesting idea, not sure what it adds over a video game though... ;)

I always heard that the Military flew drones that way.
