Is it me or does F1-2001 Suck!

My system:
Dell Dimensions 4100
PIII 933,  256Meg RAM, G-force MX. Win2000

I love F1-2000 but F1-2001 plays like ***on my machine.  What
setting do I have to use 320x240? I chose 800X600 16bit.  The game is
not smooth on my system.  The car is undriveable with all of the
difficulty settings turned off.   The steering over corrects, the car
goes from one side of the track to the next.   What sensitivity
setting do I have to use?  I like F1-2000  better.  F1-2001 is a
frustrating experience!    I am highly disappointed.  I have never had
this much problems getting any sim to work smoothly. If I did, I
returned the game.

I think this game hates NVidea cards...

Same PC as you, PIII933, 512MB, W2K SP2, but I have a ATI Redeon 32DDR.  I
get decent frame rates at 1024 X 768 X 32bit .

As far as the controller the defaults work fine with my LWFF GP USB, though
I did dial down the deadzone a bit.

make sure you edit the config file in the F1 2001 directory to change to
windowedmode=1. That speeds up the framerate considerably ...

I had similar problems, similar setup: PIII 900, 256MB RAM, GF2 GTS, W2K,
LWFF.  Frame rate ~10 FPS. Grr.

Solution: (BTW Fortunately my PC is set to dual-boot W98)
Install under W98, 6.31c drivers (mine happen to be ASUS), run FRAPS.  Hey
presto, test day I'm ~70FPS will everything on full or max at 1024x768
16bit.  Full grid I'm ~30 FPS at start ~50 FPS in the race.  Note - don't
set other car detail to the highest setting, this drops me to 10FPS!!

Re: steering, make sure you fiddle with the settings on control 1 (?) from
the icon on the bottom of the controller config page in F12001.  Personally
I found reducing the deadzone stopped much overcorrecting. Also try DXTweak.

Stick with it - my initial impressions were not good, but after much good
advice from this NG, IMHO it is the best modern F1 sim at the moment.

Runs like Jacques le Ursine on my nVidea GF2 GTS (fps = 30+ on the grid; 60+
running alone) w. a K7-1.3Ghz.
