Has patch for N2k2 improved AI during accidents?

by Peter Ive » Wed, 05 Jun 2002 06:08:40

HI all,

I've been running the UK release of N2K2 for about a month or so and
have certainly been enjoying myself - GPL doesn't get as much of a look
in as it used to - but I've been getting just a little frustrated with
the way the AI behaves during wrecks and, seeing as I haven't d/l'd the
patch for N2K2 on my 56k connection (How big is it anyway?), I was
wondering if things had been improved.

As a for instance, I was happily running out in front at Texas when
there's an accident in T2 while I'm just entering T1.  As I'm slowing
down I see there's quite a mess of cars in front, but even though I'm
still doing over 100mph I'm able to pick a gap and go through as I think
to myself that I've avoided any coming togethers.  Well, another 100
yards further along is this stationary car (forget who) in the middle of
the exit of T2 facing towards the outside wall and so, as I'm already
low, I go even lower to avoid hitting it, only for the b*st*rd to
quickly reverse leaving me nowhere to go except run directly into him.
One instant wrecked engine and RACE OVER, grrr!!

I checked the replay and from his***pit I can actually see my car
approaching as he suddenly slaps into reverse in the blink of an eye and
reverses right in front of me.

Surely in a real-life situation the driver would wait for any fast
approaching cars to go by before deciding to move up or down the track
and this would certainly help decrease the amount of pile ups that occur
if this was implemented in the Papy code, so any chance that the patch
has addressed this issue, or can others here confirm that it's still a
prob.

Like I said at the beginning, I'm really enjoying the racing in this
game, its just the unexpected crashing that's a minor pain in the arse
and I'm still doing enough of that on my own without any help from the
AI.  Then again, perhaps this is some kind of worthwhile preparation for
racing online, though with 56k conn. I'm not too sure that I would want
to try it out as yet. :)

If you're only racing offline, do NOT patch your N2002, the AI was
broken in the patch and is useless on certain tracks now (Sears Point),
wait for the next patch which according to Eric Busch will address the
bugs introduced in the first patch, the AI being one of them

That sucks - I run online *and* offline... :(

I agree.  The AI in NR2002 acts like it doesn't use spotters sometimes.

First we need to remind you N3 was the END of one long product line.  N4
and beyond was the 2nd attempt at a new software engine for Nascar, so MANY
things that were in N3 are NOT in N4 or N2002.  When you look back for
similarities, compare GPL(which didn't have any spotters) rather than N3.
As to the AI spotters, folks here found the AI seems to key off of YOUR
spotter, not individual AI spotters.  So if YOUR guy doesn't warn you of the
car high, then YOU better get on the brakes cuz the AI will be comming down.
If however you get to the point where your spotter gives the 'car high'
warning, then the AI seem to behave themselves and stay in the upper groove.
good luck, have fun
