Can I use Stealth 3D card?

by bru.. » Sat, 14 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Just a quick question.  I will be getting a 6x86 166 24 meg ram with a
Diamond stealth 3d card in it.  Can I run the rendition version of
NASCAR 2 or not.
I know if I have a choice that I should go with the cards everyone
mentions here, but what if I already have the card. Is the game only
made for certain cards?  Do I need to buy more than one card if
different companies try to promote certain cards by making themonly
compatible with them?
Are there any certain cards that seem to work with all or most games?

OK, maybe it was more than one question, but I got the Stealth 3D
because I thought I needed it to run the rendition version, if I was
mistaken, then I just wasted my money.

NO, you have to have a Rendition card to run the Rendition version of
Nascar2.  The Stealth3D is not a viable option for a 3D accelerator.
The games that are accelerated on it look much better that the normal
versions, but in most cases actually run slower.  Right now there will
be 3 types of 3D games: those for the Rendition cards, those for the
Voodoo cards, and Win95 Direct3D games.

FWIW, all the Rendition-based cards are D3D compliant.  ICR2-3D, N2, etc,
were optimised using Rendition's Speedy3D because they are DOS games.

As are the Voodoo cards.  The point was that nearly all the games
coming out for 3D accelerators are using one of those 3 APIs: Speedy3D
for the Rendition, Glide for the Voodoo, or Direct3D for all compatible
3D accelerators.  There really are no retail version for the Virge,
Matrox, ATI, or other cards.  For these cards, you need to relay on
their less than ideal Direct3D support.
