GP2 Steering Help

by p tenhe » Tue, 03 Mar 1998 04:00:00

I'm new to GP2 and trying to set up steering with out Steering Help ON
is giving me fits.  I've tried every recommended setting I've found at
various Pages and every combination of Low Sensitivity Zone,Max Lock, and
Reduce With Speed(literally from the minimum to maximum settings for
each) and I can not adequately control the car at any speed. With just
the least amount of steering input the car the moves all over the track
making it impossible to negotiate the simplest of turns or make
straight-away corrections. I'm using  a TM Nascar Pro wheel without a
game card. Any suggestions? Would a game card make any differance or am
I doomed to using steering help?

Hi there

do you have it setup as a joystick or wheel (In Windows)

I found that cfging my wheel as a jstik caused large dead zone
cfg the wheel as a T2 with adaptor & alls OK now

Hi,

I am using T2 wihch is much like Nascar Pro wheel. I have no problems
with it, but when I first tried driving without SH, I even had problems
staying on the track in the straights. I think you just need a little
practise (it took me few hours to get used to it though). The wheel you
got is quite good (TSW or ECCI users overlook my remark :) and precise and
therefore it's not the wheel you have problems with. Try practising a bit
and thing should eventually settle themselves out. I know some drivers using
Nascar Pro Wheel and they had no such problems (but I also know of some
drivers that use some non-precise wheels like Mad Katz or Turbo per4mer,
etc. and they suffer such problems). I think a game card wouldn't make
much difference, since it is used only when you have problems with
calibrating the wheel. I use my SB's game port and it works :)
But you can try my settings if you like :
low sens zone : 15% (you might want more for this one)
max lock : 16deg
decrease with speed : 30%
then set accelerator and brake to your own feel (I use 10% and 0%)

Getting a dedicated game card might make a difference if your machine is too
fast for the sound card port, usually this is not the case unless you have a
p200 or faster.  Even still this might not be the problem, I have a Nascar
Pro and a P266 and never had a problem.  Let me tell you how I set up my
game initially.  After you first install the game, under the joystick setup,
I assign what buttons I want to use, pedals, and such, take steering help
off, and change max lock to 16 or 18, I don't remember which(I want the baby
to TURN when I say turn!) , Then I CALIBRATE the wheel.  This is very
important, even if you are running under win95.  GP2 runs in Dos mode, so
you can't skip that.  Try recalibrating and see if it works.

I bought a Thrustmaster T1, and I still took a month to realise that
you have to remove steering help to get the full performance from it!
I think the settings I have are almost the same as the default. It's
certainly not easy. I have to keep the traction control on at all times
or I spin far too readily. Also, it's much harder to hit the apex of the
corner correctly, so for the moment I've gone back to using the
racing line. I'm not sure whether it's my fault, the software fault
or a fundamental problem of computer simulations with not being able
to see depth very well.

Overall, I've probably lost a second or two per lap, but I enjoy it
a whole lot more. Hopefully, over time I'll more than make up that
initial loss. Just persevere is my suggestion.
