Gp2 Steering Help For Keyboard Drivers

Gp2 - Keyboard Drives. It's driving me mad!

Ok, i've been playing gp1 almost everyday since it came out, and i'm even
more crazy about Gp2.

But! Being a keyboard driver, i'm getting so fed up with the computer
chucking my car around everytime i come alongside another car. The computer
also takes over the steering when lapping backmarkers, the backmarker moves
out the way, but Gp2 wont let you steer round it.

I'm tearing my hair out because Gp2 just isnt letting ME drive MY car as
i want to!

****

This is what we need: A patch that disables gp2 from overriding the steering
when coming alongside a computer car.

I hope that wouldnt be too hard for all you programmers to do, it would
certainly improve the game so much. I mean, i cant enjoy gp2 as i'd like,
a patch to stop gp2 taking over the car would be brilliant...

Any comments from programmers?

Continuing...it's so annoying the way Geoff implemented steering help,
it would be fine the way it was in gp1, but with the new release he
somehow decided what a good idea it would be to help human players by
steering the cars for us.

If i go into a bit more detail about how the steering help/opposite lock
works, you'll see just how annoying it is for us keyboard drivers.

Opposite lock: If you tap left, gp2 will tap a little right, have you noticed
how the car 'wobbles' when you try and steer? That's
               opposite lock coming into effect.

When coming along side other cars, the steering help is
totally changed, so if you tap left, opposite lock will
turn hard right, and hence chucking the car off the track.

It's so annoying, i hope this message will prompt a gp2 programming expert
to develop a patch to solve this problem...

Many thanks,

Hi Simon,

Since you obviously play GP2 a lot, why not get a wheel or at the very
least a decent joystick. It is an incredibly realistic driving model
when you use a wheel (with all aids turned off of course <g>). If you
play it a lot, justify the cost by saying that it is so many pence per
hour rather than a large one off price! Better still, so many pence
per lap - sounds very, very cheap like this <gg>

I suspect that this would actually be rather hard and would involve
delving into the very internals of how GP2 is written (most patches
are only concerned with altering data values). It is perhaps a little
unreasonable to expect someone else to devote several days/weeks of
their time simply so you can avoid spending some of your own money!

Cheers,
Richard

I am using a joystick and also find these problems very annoying. Most
of the time I can't keep on the track without streering help. But with
streering help have you ever found that when you slowly come up behind
someone and attempt an overtake, your car suddenly darts out to leave
you in the gravel?
Also I know what you mean about lapping lappers, it just dosent let you
through on slow corners.

I suppose i'll just have to practice without streering help.

No-one ever told you were going to be able to race after 10 laps or
something...

It's practise practise....  Only now I'm competitive at ace level at
just 3 tracks...  After 4 months of playing

The lack of control is caused by steering help and opposite lock help
being on permanently for keyboard players.  There is a utility on Sami
Nurmela`s site (just go to
http://www.utu.fi/(lang_eng)/~snurmela/gp2util.html for it) that will
let you switch these helps off.  However the car is supposed to
undriveable like this as you are constantly going from no lock to full
lock, without the computer deciding how much is needed.
As Richard said if you are unwilling to pay for a wheel then a small
investment in a joystick is well worth it, the game is much more
enjoyable without the helps on.

Mark
