GP2 steering itself?/steering limitations?

I'm new to GP2, though I've played a lot of NFS and a bit of NFS2 and
the ICR2 demo and also I-76. I've got a bizarre problem when I try
and use GP2 though. It's as if there's some kind of annoying steering
help on. I go to get ready for a turn, crank the wheel to the left a
bit and the car just flys to the left. At other times I try and go wide
to the outside to prepare for a turn and I can't do it. It's as if I'm
bouncing back from an invisible wall. I've made sure that all driving
aids are off except for autogears. One place I've noticed this is Monza,
the very first left and turn, the Variante Goodyear?

Has anyone else noticed this? Am I doing something incorrect?

Also, more generally; is this game just not as good as ICR2? The driving,
graphics, everything just don't seem up to the quality of ICR2.

Yes, you are doing something wrong. The 'steering help' is exacly what it says. It is an option called sterring help which is in the=
configure controllers menu option. Just click it to off.

As for not as good as ICR2, ICR2 the graphics are worse and the car model is worse, and the quality of the program is worse than GP2=

To each their own.  ICR2's graphics may not be as stellar as GP2's, but
I would rather run ICR2 with a Rendition card and all graphics turned
on at a frame rate of 30, than run GP2 with almost all graphics off,
and a frame rate of 18-20.  Besides the graphics in the Rendition
version of ICR2 are quite pleasing.

ICR2 does not model an Formula 1 car well at all, but then, GP2 does
just as bad modelling a CART Indy Car.

Both sims bring something different to the table.  Also, GP2 is a newer
release than ICR2.  There are still some bugs left in ICR2, and come to
think of it there are still some bugs left in GP2.

Bottom line, drive the one you like and leave the other one alone.  Or
you could be like a few discerning sim drivers, drive both and enjoy
them for what they are.

Turn the Steering help option OFF.

You only need this ON if you are using a digital control device, eg:-
keyboard.

You will find it on the advanced control device screen.

Are you kidding or what?
Gp2 has THE BEST physics engine, and with a good set-up, is the best
simulated drive you will see at the moment, from any game/sim
manufacturer.

Yes, it has slow frame rates in svga, but the best graphics in vga you
will ever see.

Yes, you need a 200 mmx or better to run it with all/most graphics on,
but it happily runs on a 486 with some of the graphics turned off.

You can adjust every detail (almost, not tyre pressures or the weather),
to your hearts content, or not adjust anything and still have a decent
race.

You can race a full season, with about 20 other drivers, including warm
ups, qualifying, and pre race sessions, or just have a quick blast around
a track of your choice on your own.

You can get programs/patches/editors to change just about everything you
want, from team names to driver names, to car graphics, to ads on the
trackside objects, to helmets, to bhp and grip levels, to your position
in the pit lane!!!!!!

There are driver aids to help those who are not so gifted at driving,
about 10 different views of the car, a replay facility for the last 30
seconds, or a whole lap or series of laps, save games, control set-ups,
car set-ups, etc, etc, etc.......

Yeah, I see what you mean, the quality is just not up to the job.

But hey, its STILL the best.

Eric,

You cannot drive the car with steering help OFF.
Don't ask me why. When steering help is ON the car tends to follow the
white dotted line even with track detail turned off.

Regards, Paul.

You have to turn steering help off, it is on the joystick setup screen.  I
would recomend to get a wheel set if are going to drive with steering help
off.  IMHO, GP2 is much better than ICR2 in every spect of the game, there
is no dout about it in my mund.

Thanks to all who offered assistance. It was a simple case of user error.
I had thought steering help was one of the Fn key toggles and so had
not found it on first glance through the quick key reference early in the
manual. I like it much better now! The lack of "invisible walls" makes
for much less frustration. The first time I tried a standing start after a
spin, though, I found out what opposite lock help had been doing!

I'll think more about the graphics relative to the ICR2 demo. My ***
time has been spread thin since the P5-90 to P5-150 update, having
recently gotten GP2, I-76 and NFS2.
