N4 requires P5/2Ghz + Voodoo 10

Sorry people but on my P3/800 + V5500 it's just plain aweful!

As I drive GPL with excellent results (2xFSAA at 1026x768 constant 36fps)
from my system I know it's not my system.

Dx8 (no openGL driver for V5500)

Frame Rate 4xFSAA 13-18
Frame Rate 2xFSAA 22 - 38
Frame Rate noFSAA 34 - 42

This from a lowely 1024x768x16(colour depth)

And with only 1 car on the track!

What is worse, despite the above frame rates the outside graphics appear to
step across the screen when turning. This is *** the eyes and distracts
from being able to drive well.

On each incarnation of Nascar the outside view becomes smaller. I get the
sense that I am now driving from the rear seat. Looking at real life footage
of drivers behind the wheel, they are almost cramped up against it which
means that they hardly see the wheel while driving.

More outside view would allow better driving judgement. I think the smaller
view is probably there to help frame rate. Well guys (and gals) it aint
working!

Won't be buying this. Will put up with the ***A1 of Nascar Heat (excellent
frame rate and full field)

there's something wrong with your setup.

get 46-51 fps at 1084x768x16 and 27-34fps at 1084x768x32.  i'm using dx8 and
winME.

it looks absolutely teriffic! and very smooth.

maybe it's the voodoo card...those things have kinda been passed by in the
tech. race, no? pick up a GeForce (or maybe a Radeon).

I'd take a hard look at the drivers for your V5 or something-  My lowly
setup(Duron 750/128MB/GeForce 2 32MB) gets 50-55 fps at 1024x768 with
everything maxed,2x2 FSAA using OpenGL. Hopefully the D3D renderer isn't
that much worse than OGL- but I guess it could be. I certainly haven't
experienced any of the problems you mentioned, and haven't seen too many
other complaints- but I've mostly spoken to guys using OGL.

Sorry you're having problems- you're missing a pivotal moment in racing
sims,  almost on a par with the release of GPL.

Hi Alan,

no probs here - I have a 1GHz Thunderbird with a V3-3000, and N4 rocks, with
everything cranked up to max and more. I use 1152x862 resolution. All
super-smooth.

Don't bother explaining your hardware setup and excellent framerates.
This is an alpha version...you know, what hasbro released as a
finished version with Nascar Heat.  There are those who simply will
not admit N4's superiority over Nascar Heat,  and will miss out on a
lot of great fun by passing over N4 while they continue to Beat the
Mheat.

Actually I had a10 fps _increase_ with D3D as opposed to OGL (TNT2 Ultra on

bit nicer, though, D3D looks a bit washed out in comparison.

Wrong. You'll get a better framerate with the outside views, with no***pit
on the way. Rendering the***pit increases the load of the system, not
vice-versa. Remember that this is a full moving 3D***pit, not a static
2D sprite as the cocpits used to be in the old days. Whatever the reasons
for Papy are for deciding the size of the***pit view, they are not
framerate related.

My only actual complaint of the demo (and the game) is that I don't like
Nascar. :P

Something hasto be wrong on your end. Even my celeron 300a o/c 378 or
whatever it is, 64mb ram and a voodoo3 2000 runs 800x600x32 and never drops
below 26fps.. not super high fps, but doesnt sound much worse than yours :).
Check all your drivers, thats the most likley problem. Good luck!

The readme says:

16-BIT VS. 32-BIT COLOR

Because of the large amount of textures used in NASCAR 4, it is recommended
that 32-bit color only be used on video cards with 64 MB or more texture
memory.  Note that even for 64 MB cards 16-bit color will likely result in
significantly better performance.

Hope this helps

Thanks for all your replies, but as I said GPL & Nascar Heat rocks and so
does all other games I play.

I get everthing I expect form my 'puter, except N4!

Incidently I have ME and Dx8 and all my drivers are bang up to date. No
other probs like sound/video sharing same IRQ etc.

As I work as a Network Administrator I would know if my system wasn't top
notch.

So again, N4 is out on its own for being the only black sheep on my system.

Regards all,
Alan

Have you tried the GP3 fix thing of setting single-chip instead of
fastest-performance (i know that bug was supposed to be fixed in the last
drivers, but hey, it's worth checking).  And of course, make sure you have
the latest drivers.

One other thing, I'm still using DX7, and N4 is DX7 code, but using dx8
shouldn't cause a problem really.

Whoa, isn't that like using a Ferrari chassis with a hmmm Volvo S70 V-6
engine? ;-)
