Serious help required to get a decent framerate in N4

by Glenn Beaumari » Wed, 15 Aug 2001 17:27:08

Hi All

I have just got N4, and with my experimentation I can a max of 25 to 30fps
in testing mode.  This drops to 15 to 20fps with 1 opponent in a race, and
1fps with all 43 cars.

My PC spec is as follows:
Celeron 700 w/256Mb RAM
Windows XP
Nvidia M64 video card w/32Mb

I have tried all the tweaks possible both within the game and with the ini
files.  Does anyone with a similar PC spec, get a decent framerate with some
opponents?

Any help/ideas welcome.

Regards

Glenn,

I feel the problem is the M64 card. The TNT2 M64 just doesn't have the grunt
to run a hi-res game with a good frame rate.

Hi,

your system is clearly fill-rate limited. Running at a lower resolution
should probably be the best single tweak you can apply to increase
framerates. On the other hand, if you put too many cars in the game, the
AI calcs are also taxiing on the system, although I do get much better
performance even in that case on my PIII 450 & 500, GeForce 2 MX, so
most likely it's really about the fill-rate, and he tweak to display
less cars in front and in the reat should help a lot in this case.

Serious help required to get a decent framerate in N4

I am running an AMD 1200 with a GeForce 2 64mb.  When I was running N4 in
Windows ME with the 650 video drivers I was getting great frame rates (in
the 57 range).  After loading Windows XP RC1 and RC2, I tried the Windows
embedded drivers for GeForce and was getting frame rates in the 28-32 range.
I then tried the Windows 2000 drivers for the video card and got rates in
the 29-35 range.  The upshot being that I suspect that if you are running
XP, the drivers for your video card are the first big bottleneck.

The new 20.80(something) nVidia drivers with improved XP support will
be out this week. Try those.

Use OPEN GL for the nivida cards and make sure you have VSYNCH disabled and
use 16 bit color that stuff is improtant.  I would say with that setup I
wouldnt go higher that 1024x768

funny thing is that I thought it might be a problem with WinXP and it's
current drivers....now to find some time to reinstall WinMe or 2K to have a
play with that.....

I second that. In Win2k/XP OpenGL is significantly faster than DirectX from
my experience. I personally use Win2k.

Open the display properties.
Select the settings tab.
Select the "advanced" button.
Go to the tab for you video card. Mine says "Geforce 2 GTS".
Select the "Additional properties" button.
Now select the OpenGL tab. Here is where you can setup OpenGL specific
options for the driver.

I am using the Nvidia reference drivers. Your setup might you to the OpenGL
options tab quicker than my installation.
